About the Item

This evocative photograph captures the essence of an aging statue depicting the enchanting and slumbering Thalia, one of the three graces. Despite the gentle march of time and the delicate imperfections etched upon the statue's surface, Thalia's enduring beauty continues to emanate with a radiant glow. The image skillfully portrays the details of the weathered form, showcasing subtle cracks and the graceful patina that age has bestowed upon the sculpture. Yet, within the embrace of time's gentle touch, Thalia's serene expression and graceful form remain remarkably intact, illustrating the resilience of her enduring beauty against the backdrop of aging. This photograph becomes a contemplative exploration of the passage of time and the inherent resilience of true beauty. Thalia's tranquil repose symbolizes an acceptance of the cyclical nature of existence, conveying a timeless grace that transcends the mere physical manifestations of aging. In this visual narrative, viewers are invited to reflect on the impermanence of physical beauty and the profound capacity for grace to endure the gentle erosion of time. The artwork encapsulates a poignant message about the enduring nature of beauty, celebrating the quiet resilience found within the aged and imperfect features of Thalia's slumbering form. Fidel Santos is a contemporary artist whose work is profoundly influenced by the rich tapestry of Old Master, Baroque, and Renaissance art. Drawing inspiration from these classical periods, Santos skillfully weaves a visual narrative that transcends time. His artistic repertoire is characterized by a meticulous exploration of iconography and symbolism, echoing the traditions of the past while infusing them with a modern sensibility. Through his art, Santos invites viewers on a journey into the realms of allegory and metaphor, where each stroke is a thoughtful homage to the mastery of bygone eras. In seamlessly blending classical techniques with contemporary perspectives, Fidel Santos creates evocative artworks that resonate with both historical depth and contemporary relevance.

Ode to de La Tour's Penitent Magdalen
By E2 - Kleinveld & Julien
Located in New Orleans, LA
36 x 24 inches - Edition 1 of 3 with 2 APs framing is an additional $525 Photography and acting are kindred spirits in the ongoing series by E2 - Kleinveld & Julien, entitled In Empathy We Trust. The project presents viewers with re-imagined iconic images from the history of art. The collaborators re-envision the work of old master painters beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years. With subjects enacting roles with varied representations of race, age, and sexual orientation, E2’s revisionist Art History works by artists such as van Eyck, Botticelli, Raphael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, Manet and Whistler. Inspired by the original paintings, E2 hopes to “jar viewers” into questioning their own perceptions. They invite viewers to see these images, and indeed the world anew, using humor, wit and playfulness. In addition, they hope that the viewers will see how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. The collaboration began in 2010, after completing work on the traveling exhibition and book project, Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. This natural and man-made disaster brought social inequities in Louisiana into vivid focus. Conversations between Kleinveld and Julien revealed their mutual interest in issues of social justice. E2 has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as: Royal Academy of Art (London), Photoville (New York), Gemeentemuseum (The Hague), Palazzo Fortuny (Venice), Museum Castelvecchio (Verona), Galerie SIRIUS (Tokyo), New Orleans Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans). The duo is represented by JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY, New Orleans and their work appears in numerous public and private collections, including: Benetton Collection (Treviso, Italy), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Trento, Italy), Hilliard University Art Museum (Lafayette, LA) and The Marks Collection (Houston). Elizabeth Kleinveld is an artist and photographer from New Orleans, now based in Amsterdam, who takes her inspiration from Paul Outerbridge...
