About the Item

Artist proof 5/5. The image size is 23"x23" and printed on Japanese rice paper handmade. Artist proof AP/5, signed lower right and numbered lower left. It is framed. My photographs represent my longstanding interest in documenting the details of daily life around the world. My career has led me on explorations from Havana to Hanoi. . The images I have made concern quiet places..places that soothe, places that inspire, places that give pleasure to the senses. In focusing my attention on specific objects, I am attempting to portray the ordinary as objects of inherent beauty worthy of scrutiny and contemplation. Five years of travel to Greek mountain villages culminated with the publication of my book, Wreath of Dreams: Visions of Greek Villages (Kastaniotis Editions). Most recently my attention has been focused on making flower images as metaphors. My goal is to make my photographs work on two levels…visual and emotional…to make them visually compelling as well as serving as catalysts for the viewer to contemplate words, sensations, or memories. I find I can most effectively allow each flower to tell its story by using a simple background and relying on the balance, symmetry, and interaction between the flowers to create its tale. I am playing with the use of Latin to categorize botanical specimens by using Latin words to create a title for each of the stories unfolding behind the glass. An equally compelling reason for me to use Latin is a nod and tribute to my grandmother, Yester Samuelian, who as a student in Marzvan College in 1899, did a series of botanical pressings… all with their proper Latin names. They proudly grace the walls of my home today. I have used Spanish for the Calla Lilly photographs because these were all done in Mexico and as a tribute to renowned Mexican artists who used Calla Lilies extensively in their photographs and paintings. Other than my flower images, I use place as the title. I have enjoyed exhibiting my images around the world, and one of the most fun aspects of doing this is getting to meet people in each country, whether over a cup of tea in their kitchens, or over a glass of wine at an opening. I am constantly so graciously received that I only hope I am giving something of value back to them.

Moon rise and the Milky Way
Located in La Canada Flintridge, CA
Photograph printed in Fuji Crytal Archive paper, size is 20"x30" in 24"x36" white archival mat and frame. Edition 1 of 5, signed by artist. A number of elements came together in this photo, taken during a backpacking trip into the Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Eastern Sierra, California. Just as alpine peaks glow pink long before the sun crests the horizon, so too they blush when the Moon is about to make an appearance. With sufficiently dark skies, the moonlit glow of mountains stands in contrast with the Milky Way rising above the landscape, ephemeral light that is gone far too soon. This is an aluminum Metalprint, printed by infusing dyes directly into a specially coated aluminum sheet.  Vahé Peroomian...

Title: Nuclear Fusion, Iceland Location: Iceland Edition: 1 of 5, signed by artist Description: Nuclear fusion powers the Sun as its last rays reflect from the frozen lakes of Iceland. This was photographed as I was standing on the brittle ice of a frozen lake, wary of each footstep I took toward the setting Sun. Vahé Peroomian is a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Southern California (USC). He received a Ph.D. in Physics from UCLA in March, 1994, specializing in numerical simulations of space plasmas, and carried out research in that field for 25 years before transitioning into a full- time teaching and innovative pedagogy position at USC. Vahé’s love of photography as a child and young adult blossomed into a passion more than twenty years ago. Since then, he has taken every opportunity to pursue his fascination with photography and the beauty of the Gaian landscape. He is a self-trained photographer, and prefers a hands-on approach and independent experimentation with photographic styles and techniques. He has found that the same off-the-wall approach that works in solving physics problems helps him see landscapes in a new light as well. The self-similar shapes in landscapes, and the play between cloud...
