Through her Small Museum project, Simone Rosenbauer offers an insider’s view of 41 small, mostly privately-owned museums throughout rural Australia. Small Museum presents encounters with the museums and their caretakers, culminating in a body of collective imagery and conversations. The research attests to the human imperative to collect, archive, display and sustain objects and information for public consumption. Throughout Australia, these museums proliferate, often classified and intended for the local community and historical preservation, or for the commemoration of an event or trauma, particularly in a country like Australia, where the human diaspora and issues of colonization are integral to the local ethos.
Born in Germany in 1977, Rosenbauer studied at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund. Thereafter, she was granted the Europe Endeavor Award, from the Australian government, to pursue MFA
studies in photography at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. She completed her studies there in 2010, and continues to live, work, and teach in the Sydney area.

Simone Rosenbauer
Born in Germany in 1977, Simone Rosenbauer received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees there at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund. Thereafter, she was granted the Europe Endeavor Award from the Australian government to pursue MFA studies in photography at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. She completed her studies there in 2010 and continues to live, work, and teach in the Sydney area. In 2011, her work was selected for participation in the reGeneration2 project, sponsored by the Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Aperture Foundation (New York). Her work continues to be shown in many local and international venues.
