About the Item
Sculpture is a beautiful gray, with delicate texturing and the opening at the top of the stairs casts a striking reverse shadow. This plated steel pedestal sculpture is from Bella Feldman's 1984-1994 "Architectonic" series, inspired by a trip to Mexico. After she visited the pyramids in the Yucatan, Feldman wrote in her journal, "Climbing the steeply rising stairs, I feel a sense of dislocation and vertigo. On either side of the reconstructed section, the building falls away, returning to crumbling rock and earth and vines. Solidity is always undermined." The resulting sculptures demonstrated visually this dialogue between construction and destruction, as well as the balance and lack of balance that she feels have always been present in her work.
This sculpture was awarded 1st prize during the group exhibition "Passages" by guest curator Steve Oliver, who founded the world famous Oliver Ranch in Sonoma County, California, with his wife Nancy. The sculpture is one-of-a-kind and is signed on the front edge of the horizontal surface to the left of the stairs.
Bella Feldman has participated in over fifty solo exhibitions in all parts of the United States and in Switzerland. Her work has been published in numerous catalogs, and articles and reviews have appeared throughout the art press. She taught sculpture at a major California art school for several decades, chaired the sculpture department there for two years, and has been invited to lecture at universities across the country and in Uganda. Her sculpture is in museum, corporate, and private collections worldwide.

View All"SeaWave Maquette" cast bronze sculpture
By Gerard Tsutakawa
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Gerard Tsutakawa is best known for his numerous monumental corporate and public commissions throughout the Northwest US and Japan. One of his more recent iconic forms is found in his 'SeaWave' series, with the full-scale sculpture installed at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena in 2021. Here we have made available a cast bronze edition of the maquette of the already acclaimed public art sculpture. An edition of 20, this maquette is a rare opportunity to own a cast sculpture by the cherished Seattle sculptor!
Finished in the artist's signature dark blue patina with brown and gold tinges and signed and numbered along the bottom edge.
Gerard Tsutakawa’s designs are a confluence of the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim. Tsutakawa grew up with a rich heritage of Japanese design creativity and sensibility combined with a lifetime spent in the Pacific Northwest’s beautiful natural environment. Exposure to the esthetics of cultures around the Pacific Rim instilled a humanistic approach to his creative process. He gathers images as bold as a Tongan war club, or as sensitive as folded origami paper, and creates a subliminal integration as a new art form.
Tsutakawa apprenticed with his father, the late George Tsutakawa...
