Bella Feldman
Missile 5

2014

About the Item

This steel and glass pedestal sculpture is from Bella Feldman's "War Toys" series, which began in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War and has continued into her current work. Some works in the series look dangerous, while others appear laughably ineffectual. Here, the curved glass tip and streaming steel ribbons surrounding the "missile" take the edge off the well known weapon of war. The entire sculpture can be rolled on the small steel wheels, and the top missile section can be redirected, or aimed, by turning it on its base. The dimensions of 14"H x 29"W x 6"D reflect the sculpture when at rest and with the missile facing directly to the side, parallel to the platform below. The height is fixed but the width and depth will change when rotating the missile in different positions. The sculpture is signed "BELLA" on the glass tip. Feldman has participated in over fifty solo exhibitions in all parts of the US and in Switzerland. Her work has been published in numerous catalogs, and articles and reviews have appeared throughout the art press. She taught sculpture at a major California art school for several decades, chaired the sculpture department there for two years, and has been invited to lecture at universities across the country and in Uganda. Her sculpture is in museum, corporate and private collections worldwide.
