About the Item

"Swing" is a minimalist abstract sculpture in fabricated bronze that was conceived in 1969 and can be considered a Mid-Century Modern artwork. It is finished with Clement Meadmore's "honey waxy" patina in beautiful shades of warm browns. The sculpture balances on its own but can also be secured using a single screw via a keyhole opening underneath the sculpture. The artist's signature, year of creation, and edition number are inscribed along the bottom edge of the piece. The title, year, edition number, and foundry stamp are also inscribed underneath, next to the keyhole. This sculpture is number 7 in an edition of 8 plus 2 Artist's Proofs (at this Maquette size). Please contact us for more details. Clement Meadmore was born in Melbourne and originally studied aeronautical engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. After graduating in 1949, he designed furniture until 1953 when his first sculpture of welded steel was offered for sale. While a young artist, his work was highly regarded and he was awarded a number of exhibitions, including several one-person shows in Melbourne and Sydney, where he had lived since 1960. Meadmore moved to New York in 1963 at the age of 34, and later became a United States citizen. With the exception of a year spent in Australia as photo editor for Vogue magazine, Meadmore lived and worked in New York for the remainder of his career. Meadmore passed away in April, 2005, leaving an important legacy of elegant, gravity-defying sculpture in many prestigious venues in the US, Japan, and Mexico. The Meadmore Estate continues to have the open editions of his works in all size ranges fabricated in the same way as he did while he was alive. Please inquire about possibilities.
