About the Item

This dynamic abstract painted metal sculpture by Edward (Eduardo) Arcenio Chavez (1917-1995) exemplifies his mastery of modern art. Painted with black and in the three primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—this sculptural piece captures the bold and energetic spirit of mid-century modern design. The sculpture measures 16 ½ x 7 x 11 inches, making it an impactful tabletop piece that blends abstract expressionism with vibrant color contrasts. About the Artist: Eduardo Chavez (1917-1995), a prominent American modernist, was a multifaceted artist known for his work as an illustrator, muralist, painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Born in Wagonmound, New Mexico, Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he honed his skills under the mentorship of artists such as Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Arnold Blanch, and Peppino Mangravite. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, Chavez painted murals across the Western United States, capturing the diverse landscapes and cultural themes of the region. After the war, he settled in Woodstock, New York, where he became part of an artistic community that included Bruce Currie, Fletcher Martin, and his wife, artist Jenne Magafan. The 1940s and 1950s were a period of significant artistic growth for Chavez, and he became known for his modern interpretations of Western themes through bold colors and dynamic compositions. Chavez received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Tiffany Grant in 1948, the Fulbright Award in 1951, and the Childe Hassam Award in 1953. He also served as an instructor at the Art Students League and held faculty positions at Syracuse University and Colorado College. His work was widely exhibited, including at major institutions such as MoMA, PAFA, Los Angeles MA, and the Corcoran Gallery. Chavez’s art can be found in prestigious collections, including the Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, Detroit Museum of Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art.
