About the Item
Entanglements: Seeking Beauty in the Overlooked
My work challenges the traditional norms of an artist's medium and practice. Materiality often becomes my muse, driving my creative process to question: What is considered beautiful, and why?
While my materials may seem unconventional, the focus is not on the materials themselves, but rather on the abstract sculptures they form. My aim is to captivate the viewer, sparking visual delight and inviting them to engage with the work. This interaction often leads to the discovery of the materials that lie beneath the surface.
This series blends my minimalistic reed and rubber-enrobed forms with a newly discovered technique of knitting with factory waste paper. The pieces in this series are entirely made from salvaged materials, including factory-discarded dressmaker’s pattern tissue and reclaimed orange polymer fiber cording. The cording, once used to bind bales of pine straw—a natural mulch used in flower beds throughout the southeastern United States, where I now reside—finds new life in these creations.
By transforming overlooked and discarded materials into visually striking sculptures, I challenge viewers to reconsider their perceptions of value and aesthetics in art. -Eileen Braun

Eileen Braun
Eileen Braun’s work is heavily influenced by her interest in nurture and science. As a child, she listened to dinnertime conversations that were a blend of her mother’s attending to the growing family's needs and her father’s sharing updates from the scientific research community. Her current sculptural work in many ways blends these two. She creates biomorphic forms that appear to be communicating human-like emotional needs. Although the work is 3D they are very much drawings in space. The shadows they cast are informed by the often changing light passing through them, changing one’s perception of space. Like her father before her, Eileen delights in experimenting with materials, often surprising viewers with the lightness of seemingly much heavier sculptures. A native of Massachusetts, Eileen Braun began formal fine-art training began at C. W. Post College (Long Island, New York) and continued at Indiana University (Bloomington) where she was awarded a B. A. degree in Sculpture and Education. Her ceramics training was acquired at local Arts Centers and Regional Workshops. Ms. Braun taught in public schools, served as Executive Director of a suburban New York Arts Center, and also worked as a Museum Giftshop Buyer and Manager. A full-time artist, Ms. Braun completes the majority of her work in her Atlanta, Georgia studio.

Melissa Pokorny's work focuses on the sense of space, and its role in structuring memory and identity. Her larger-scale sculptures, mixed media tableaus, and installations incorporate fragmented images of landscape and nature that highlight contested spaces, borders and boundaries between the natural world and our presence in it.
Pokorny's recent work explores literal and metaphorical attachments , in a call-and-response between people, places, and things. The sense of absence prevails, emphasized by situations that illicit awareness of loss -- of losing one's was, or the loss of memory to time and distance. People go missing, and things are left behind.
Mellissa Pokorny has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years. Her large scale, assemblage-based sculptural works have been widely exhibited at venues across the US. Recent solo shows at Platform Gallery in Seattle and Front Room Gallery in New York augment a long career of solo exhibitions, beginning with Gallery Paule Anglim, in San Francisco and continuing with Bodybuilder and Sportsman in Chicago. Selected group exhibitions include venues such as Yerba Buena Gardens, Southern Exposure, Victoria Room, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco, Foodhouse Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 400, Columbia College,The James Hotel, and Devening Projects +Editions in Chicago, and The Richard Peeler...
