About the Item

Artist Commentary: Bad Moon Ascending is a result of a lyric in the CCR song "Bad Moon Rising", the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and my sculptural pursuits of my "Event" series. Keywords: abstract, welded metal Artist Biography: Fred Klingelhofer, a primarily self-taught artist, grew up in a Chicago south side neighborhood. He received a BS degree in physics from Roosevelt University and worked as an engineer for 30 years. During those years he enrolled in art workshops and classes at a nearby community college completing courses in figure drawing, 2D and 3D design, ceramics, sculpting the figure, welding and metal sculpture. His focus has been on creating sculpture since 2006. Fred has exhibited his sculpture in a number of group exhibitions with Chicago Sculpture International, Art Prize (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Sculpture in the Park (St Charles, Illinois), Sculpture Walk Sioux Falls (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), and has completed a number of public commissions. He strives to engage the casual observer as well as sculpture enthusiast by varying the degree of abstraction and realism giving even small sculpture an architectural presence that can be entered and explored. Fred’s personal history influences how he creates pieces. The viewer’s personal history will determine how they engage and give meaning to the work.

Artist Commentary: Event 02.2000.015 is a one of an ongoing series of sculptures exploring my envisioning cosmic events and their existence in spacetime. Anachronic, Original Abstract Sculpture, 2021
By Francisco Rosario
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: Anachronic is a piece in a body of work exploring sound and the way that it inhabits space in the built environment. The pattern, repetition, and weaving represent the rhythm, texture, and syncopation of sound. This piece represents an envelope of sound, a finite piece of time, a controlled environment. It is heavily influenced by my time as a DJ and the practice of connecting patterns. It is about a controlled process - the merging of a creative practice with an understanding of materials and technique. In this object the marks of process are left bare, witness to the hand, craft, and labor. It is an homage to skilled work and the workers I learned from. Keywords: 3D, plane, wood, metal Artist Biography: Leaning into a bias toward abstraction/intuition, artist Francisco Rosario...

"Untitled" Sidney Gordin, Abstract Metal Steel Sculpture
By Sidney Gordin
Located in New York, NY
Sidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...

Abstract Expressionist Biomorphic Welded Metal Sculpture
By Seymour Lipton
Located in Surfside, FL
Welded, brazed sculpture on wooden base This is not signed or dated This work is unsigned. We were told it was the work of Seymour Lipton but as there is further documentation we are selling it as attributed and cannot guarantee it as such. Seymour Lipton (1903 – 1986) was an American abstract expressionist sculptor. He was a member of the New York School who gained widespread recognition in the 1950s. He initially trained as a dentist, like fellow sculptor Herbert Ferber, receiving his degree from Columbia University in 1927. In the late 1920s, he began to explore sculpture, creating clay portraits of family members and friends. His early choices of medium changed from wood to lead and then to bronze, and he is best known for his work in metal. Like his contemporary, Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, and Arshile Gorky Lipton was influenced by Carl Jung’s work on the unconscious mind and the regenerative forces of nature. He translated these two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional maquettes that enabled him to revise his ideas before creating the final sculpture. The forms that Lipton produced during this period were often zoomorphic, exemplifying the tension between the souls of nature and the automatism of the machine. He made several technical innovations, including brazing nickel silver rods onto sheets of Monel to create rust resistant forms. Seymour Lipton is best known for his textured torch welded metal sculptures...
