"Duke" by John Clement
Abstract Metal Sculpture in red painted steel
In his sculptures, John Clement bends stainless steel into fanciful curvilinear forms focused on essential questions of movement and line. A student of Mark di Suvero, Clement creates work that continues his mentor’s engagement with industrial materials, but incorporates whimsy and an implied sense of motion. Reducing his formal lexicon to monochrome lines, Clement employs his signature motif of spiraling tubes of steel, coated in bright primary and secondary colors, or in some cases leaving them with a polished steel finish. Varying in size from a few inches tall to a monumental scale, his sculptures may loop around several times or bend into a straight line such that each reveals a new expressive, if minimal, gesture.
