About the Item
Linda Stein, Heartstone Scepter 163 - Wood, Metal, Stone, Mixed Media Contemporary Sculpture
In the 1980s, Linda Stein began a series called Ceremonial Scepters, where she imagined an excavation by anthropologists who discovered that a long-lost civilization existed centuries ago, with members of the community creating scepters used in their ritualistic ceremonies.
Heartstone Scepter 163 comes with a case (see photos).
According to the art dealer George W. Staempfli:
"There are few ritual objects in the world which evoke as wide a range of associations in human beings as Scepters. In our fantasies they are intimately connected with ancient kingdoms, with feudal and magic personal power-fields, and they represent important concepts of traditional regal functions throughout different ages and tribal societies.
Linda Stein is deeply aware of these underlying currents in her sculptural creations. The shapes and materials she fuses into primitive three-dimensional statements are alive with what C. G. Jung called 'inherited group subconscious.' Visually, they are stark, impressive works, pared down to essential forms related to trees, roots or bones, and ennobled by the hands of distant rulers or shamans."
Stein's works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland; and Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden.

Throughout her artistic career, Linda Stein's work has addressed issues of persecution and protection, focusing on oppression of the “other” through the lens of anti-bullying and social justice. As result of running for an entire day from the falling Twin Towers in the Ground Zero area of Manhattan, her previously-abstract work after 9/11 became figurative, armor-like, and she realized that she was creating visual and visceral symbols of protection, androgynous sentinel-like figures to stand guard against the foe. Her work often incorporates a family of pop-culture and religious icons like Wonder Woman, Princess Mononoke, Lisbeth Salander, Lady Gaga, Storm and Nausicaa, that start conversations about issues of power and vulnerability. Her works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden; and Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Sweden. Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement:
“I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject.
There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience.
They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
