About the Item
Korè-Elba granite is a unique monumental sculpture by contemporary artist Mattia Bosco. This sculpture is made of Elba granite, dimensions are 176.5 × 48 × 88.5 cm (69.5 × 18.9 × 34.8 in).
This piece is a part of a collection of twelve sculptures, two of which are Sezione Aurea, created especially for Mattia Bosco's solo exhibition "Korai," which will be on display in Rome's Colosseum Archaeological Park from 22 September 2023 to 14 January 2024.
Although identical in shape, each piece in the "Korai" series is made of a different exceptional marble, including the sculptural marble from Michelangelo's quarry, Bardiglio, Rosso Collemandina, Fantastico d'Arni, Portoro, and Cipollino d'Elbe. The Temple of Venus and Rome, a massive sacred structure opened in 136 AD, will serve as their temporary home for the duration of the exhibition. These marbles are typical of the period of imperial Roman architecture and are in perfect harmony with the spirit of the location.
The process used by the artist is significantly different from that of traditional sculpture, where the sculptor begins with a block of stone that already contains the desired and imagined form and then removes extra material. For Mattia Bosco, on the other hand, the sculptor's intervention is straightforward, constrained, and limited, and it only seeks to bring out and purify the form that is already present in the stone. Form and substance are therefore inseparable; stone, for example, is already a potential sculpture because it always tends to take on a particular shape. The artist chooses the fascinating rocks from among the extracted fragments right there in the quarries. He gives them a base, sets them vertically, and begins to leave his own imprint on the surface.
Mattia Bosco works between Milan and the mountainous Piedmont region. He selects the stones that fascinate him in the quarries, then he draws out and purifies the form already present in the stone by slightly sculpting it and accentuates some sections by applying some gold leaves onto it. The resulting abstract marble sculptures are very elegant and poetic. The sculptor has exhibited his work in several renowned institutions such as the Museum Tinguely in Basel and the Triennale Design and Art Museum in Milan. An installation of twelve marble sculptures was exhibited at the Colosseum Archaeological Park in 2023. “The sculptor’s intervention is a collaboration, following the possibilities that are manifest in the material.”
