About the Item

Traces (Trinity) is a unique concrete sculpture (timber wood base) by contemporary English sculptor Oliver Ashworth-Martin, dimensions are 19 × 19 × 19 cm (7.5 × 7.5 × 7.5 in). This sculpture is signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Seed pods—distinctive features of Australian flora—serve as a focal point in the Traces sculpture series. These pods are embedded in concrete and then subjected to burning. What remains after the fire are fossil-like impressions, where natural resins and carbon deposits leave behind unique, organic traces within the industrial material. A glimpse into this fascinating process can be seen in the accompanying video. Oliver Ashworth-Martin describes his approach: “This series is a response to the power and dynamism of the natural landscape (particularly Australia). As nature herself holds the power to violently sculpt our landscape, I too wish to utilise fire as a tool in my sculptural practice.” Deeply influenced by the scale and variety of Australia’s plant life, Ashworth-Martin often incorporates natural elements into his sculptures and drawings. By abstracting, enlarging, or juxtaposing them with industrial materials like metal, he reveals the intricate mathematical logic and aesthetic richness found in organic forms. His work invites the viewer to perceive nature with fresh eyes. As he notes: “When we become aware and mindful of our environment we see that what has always seemed so natural reveals how wondrously supernatural it really is.”
