About the Item

Steel, gold leaf, enamel paint, varnish. Richard Taylor says of his "Golden" sculpture series: "Gold is light, knowledge, power, sanctity, treasure, the sun, the glow around an icon, or the flicker behind candles in a sacred space. Gold is loaded with significance. I gilded figures atop 4 indoor sculptures in a new series paying tribute to those among us who do good deeds for others, and go unrecognized. They might care for elders in their family or work at food banks. In current times, they might work in a hospital or with the homeless. They are Golden." Richard Taylor describes his work as a distillation of life experiences, often seen through the influences of music and poetry, with the cadences, rhythms, and syncopation resonating within and informing the spirits of his pieces. Much of Taylor's work happens in series, allowing him to pursue various ideas from multiple angles as he creates a group of work that explores several variations on a single theme. He is a sculptor, and also a painter, and his painted standing sculptures fall somewhere between painting and sculpture. Time plays a very essential part in his work, as they are not so much about the details of the past as they are about the essence of our remaining memories. Taylor explains, "The painted standing sculptures recall those people in my life who have shaped my character and sculpted my being through their actions, examples, and spirits. They are my sentinels; my guideposts in my walk through life." Taylor's work has been shown in galleries throughout the United States for over 30 years. He has created site-specific commissions for numerous public and corporate projects including Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; Kaiser Hospitals in California; Milwaukee Public Central Library; U.S. Robotics in Chicago, IL; the City of Beaverton, OR; City of East Lansing, MI; Hardy Ivy Park for the City of Atlanta, GA; and General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, WI. His work is also held in prestigious public collections including Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Neiman Marcus, Visa, Hewlett-Packard, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia
