In the Projection series, begun in 1996, the artist explored a new format that evolved into mural sculptures. This approach encourages frontal viewing and engages with the concept of a mirror: the heat-reflective glass of the artworks reflects the surrounding environment, yet in a way that is distorted and markedly different from what one would expect in a conventional mirror.
Toshio Iezumi’s glass sculptures captivate viewers through their shifting appearances and their elegant, poetic presence. Vivid or subtle shades of green, real or illusory volumes, internal spaces to decipher, unexpected surface distortions, and an impression of movement created by alternating concave and convex forms all contribute to the works’ dynamic character. Glass, with its innate ability to refract light, is the central protagonist, elevated by the artist’s mastery and experience. The organic forms of the sculptures are inspired by natural elements: the undulations of wind over water or grass, the rhythmic waves of the sea, and the smooth, rounded shapes of stones.
Iezumi’s sculptural process is meticulous and complex. He begins by layering glass sheets, naturally tinted green by their iron content, to create a block of deeper color. Using an angle grinder—typically employed for stone carving—he shapes the sculpture, then removes surface scratches with successive abrasive grits. Finally, polishing with a felt buff imparts transparency and transforms the sculpture’s appearance. The artist carefully balances form (through grinding) and texture (through polishing) to fully reveal the work’s essence. In some pieces, a semi-transparent mirror is incorporated inside the sculpture, amplifying reflections and the diffusion of light.

Toshio Iezumi
Toshio Iezumi has dedicated over thirty years to working with glass. The artist creates unique sculptures using sheets of glass and a complex technique traditionally used for carving stone. His abstract artworks change appearance depending on where they are placed and the position of the viewer. Depending on whether they reflect light or let it filter through, his sculptures give off inexhaustible visual effects. Since 1985, Toshio Iezumi has exhibited in dozens of museums, galleries and art fairs worldwide. His works are included in several major public collections: the New York Museum of Art and Design, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. “When shape and texture are well balanced, an ordinary object becomes extraordinary – an artwork.”
