About the Item

YAYOI KUSAMA, (Matsumoto, 1929) Pumpkin Red, 2015 Original resin (copyright Yayoi Kusama),( mm. 102x760x760). Sculpture made of painted resin, artist's copyright stamp on underside. Published by Benesse Holdings, Inc., Naoshima, Japan. Perfect specimen in the original packaging.   Yayoi Kusama, Japanese artist born 1929, is one of the most important and influential women in contemporary art. In his more than 60-year career, he has produced and continues to produce an impressive number of works, starting with painting and moving on to installations, video art and performance art, as well as novels and poetry. Perhaps the most awe-inspiring aspect of his works, however, was his ability to deal with and delve into such an intimate subject as his own psyche, which he exposes and analyzes through the characterizing motifs of his poetics. She is extremely famous for her repeated and obsessive use of polka dots, or polka dots, which return repeatedly in her work. Their origin, however, is personal and distant, dating back to her childhood in Matsumoto, when due to the family situation, with her mother violently opposing her wanting to become an artist on the one hand, as for her an unsuitable profession for a woman, and at the same time forcing her to spy on her father, a womanizer, in his acts of betrayal, she began to suffer from hallucinations. These resulted precisely in the famous polka dots, which she now saw everywhere and which she portrays in one of the first times in a portrait of her mother: The small pencil portrait in fact, very well composed for being the work of a child, sees these small circles cover any surface, obsessively repeated in various sizes from the background to the mother's cold face.   The pumpkin is a somewhat peculiar symbol for Kusama, also rooted in her childhood. In fact, as a child living in a country area, it was not unusual in the fields to see pumpkins, which were less disturbing to her during her hallucinations because of their soft, round shape than other objects such as flowers. Hence they have become an object that brings them tranquility and often serves as their alter-ego. Through the clever use of the repetition of polka dots, it gives the viewer a strong sense that each pumpkin has its own strong and distinct personality.
