About the Item

Elizabeth Alexander's series Heirloom transforms the porcelain and ceramic serving vessels we find in our homes. In Alexander's hands, these fragile, everyday and special occasion objects become domestic symbols of beautification, success, or aspiration – home decor, but also silent measures of value, desire, and self-worth. These objects were once coveted pieces acquired at marriage, inherited, or reserved for special guests. The artist's delicate, lace-like alterations render the vessels unusable even as she confers them with new meaning. They no longer languish hidden in cupboards but are fine art objects, serving as mirrors that reflect our secret domestic lives. Drawing from her own story, with a loving yet tumultuous working-class upbringing at its heart, Elizabeth Alexander works to unpack the social, cultural, and psychological pressures within American domesticity. Raised to see the possibility in found or unwanted things, she rethinks the domestic environment as an extension of human ingenuity. Elizabeth Alexander's work can be found in the collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum and the Mint Museum and she has exhibited work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Loveland Museum, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. She has also been written about in HyperAllergic.

Important additional inspiration came from her family and from the family of a childhood friend, where Kristen found herself surrounded by the work of Paul Manship, her friend’s grandfather and one of America’s greatest sculptors. With increased focus on her art, along with winning numerous awards throughout high school, Newell eagerly enrolled in the arts program at University of Vermont and augmented her studies with a valuable year at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
