About the Item

Christophe Fratin (Metz, 1801 - Le Raincy, 1864) Lion lurking Bronze with dark patina, 30 x 51 x 14 cm Signed "FRATIN" on the base and dated "1854" Bibliography: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Fratin, objet décoratifs & sculptures romantiques, Paris, Univers du bronze, 2000 Born in 1801 in Metz, a town on the French-German border located at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, Christophe Fratin (Metz, 1801 - Le Raincy, 1864) was the son of a naturalist and taxidermist. Trained first with the sculptor Charles Augustin Pioche in his hometown, but uninspired by the overly romantic style that was spreading, he soon decided to move to Paris, where he studied in the atelier of the famous painter and sculptor Théodore Géricault, an adventurous artist with a vision from which he drew his affinity for equestrian and wild subjects and for the loose surface touch, likened in many ways to the heavy impasto of a fluid brush in the hands of his teacher. From 1831 to 1842 and from 1850 to 1862 he exhibited his work at the Paris Salon, while in 1851 he participated in London's Great Exhibition, events that helped consolidate his fame internationally. In fact, it was precisely during these years that Fratin received monumental public commissions all over the world, such as the imposing Eagles in the act of observing prey positioned since 1863 in New York's Central Park constituting the oldest existing sculptures of the New York park, the colossal bronze group depicting a Horse attacked by a lion, more than two meters high and placed in the Montrouge square in Paris, or again the majestic Standing Horse present in the main square of Metz, a tribute to the place of his birth. Unlike his contemporaries, Fratin did not have his own foundry, enlisting the services of leading Parisian foundries, such as Susse Frères, Quesnel, and Daubire, to produce his works in both terracotta and bronze, although much of his terracotta work has not survived to the present day. A pioneer of the Animalier movement along with Antoine-Louis Barye, Fratin's works are easily distinguishable in the vast artistic landscape, both in his particular free and sketchy modeling technique, which possesses a rougher quality with the surface often shaped by the sculptor's own fingers, and in his choice of subjects (tigers, panthers, goats, horses, bears, lions, etc.) that demonstrate the artist's imaginative mind as well as his great sense of humor. His in-depth knowledge of animal anatomy and their natural actions and poses, aided by his father's trade, enabled him to endow his bronzes with a realism and fidelity to the natural datum unique in their kind, characteristics that were particularly appreciated in the nineteenth century in part due to the independence that the animalier genre was gaining over the great academic or allegorical themes. Smaller works are now held in major international collections, such as the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the museum in Metz, Strasbourg, Lyon, Nîmes, Vienna, and the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.
