ALTERTATION ART . . . is a collaboration process between Rick Wolfryd, fine artist and art dealer with over 40 years experience, and various Mexican Huichol artists and Mexican Huichol art studios that Rick has been drawn to, after 10 plus years of living in Mexico.
Rick’s main focus currently involves engaging and fabricating with the Huichol style Mexican glass beadwork in order to create altered vision and collectible fine art through beadwork application and effect.
For Rick, who has been experimenting with photoshopped pixelizations on the computer for the past 20 years, there is a sublime similarity between pixel content and beadwork application . . . both relying on geometry and dot patterns effect to create special imagery.
On an aesthetic cross comparison level, Rick also has experimented with abstract anthropomorphic drawings and patterns in his earliest manual printed and drawn works . . . which later became evident in his typed illustrations and forays into pixelized computer art.
Glass beads on steroids for 2024 . . . is how Rick refers to his current work . . .
The project of ALTERATION has in mind to respectfully help the Huichol community grow and prosper and be more well-known and recognized throughout the art world . . .

CHROMA aka Rick Wolfryd
Born in Newport Beach, CA in 1953 --- Rick Wolfryd is a multi-dimensional artist & writer who has spent much of his lifetime developing his unique cultural vision and word craft outside of mainstream art experience. Currently residing in Mexico City since Summer of 2009, Rick is working simultaneously on his fine art drawings, photography, poetry, and “digital and ideological reconstructions.” Terminology he uses to describe his most recent computer generated art work. In 1998, Rick was Sotheby’s 8th largest client in the world for buying/selling/trading contemporary prints and --- to his credit --- Rick also created and co-founded one of the world’s most successful, independent Contemporary Fine Art galleries based in Los Angeles, CA --- Wolfryd-Selway Fine Art ( currently Hamilton-Selway Fine Art ).
Yet Rick’s work and influences have always been guided buy an internal drive and determination to “create sublime statements” outside of mainstream art experience & venues --- where his personal vision remains influenced, but uncompromised. According to the artist: “I am not a great scientifically minded person; I am no extraordinary visionary; I am no pointed philosopher following and establishing new rules; I am no sharp-tongued critic, or self-centered wanderer, or mystic lover of all things and people. My main artistic mission is to leave the world a much better place by inspiring people through my creative work; giving all-of-me through acts of artistry & love; generously trusting that my point of view is “just that” A small “blip” on the map of everything-beautiful (about life ) that matters, and doesn’t . . .

Fred Schumm Lifesize Whimsical Painted Wood Sculpture of a Nude
By Fred Schumm
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A great whimsical colorfully painted lifesize wood sculpture of a nude. The base has been re-painted black. It is signed on the leg Schumm, 1995.
The artist's statement from a 2007 article follows;
Fred Schumm does not view life through rose-colored glasses.
He doesn't have to.
Schumm, Rowan University's artist-in-residence, is a former U.S. Marine who lived through some of the most horrific battles of World War II. He served at Peleliu -- two months of carnage on a tiny Pacific atoll where 12,000 perished - and then four long months on the bloodied isle of Okinawa.
Since then, Schumm, 82, has mostly tried to see life's beauty. It's sort of like how sunlight, warm but ordinary to the naked eye, is refracted into myriad, impossibly beautiful combinations of color when viewed through a kaleidoscope.
And, like sunlight, he finds art everywhere.
"Inspiration is all around but mostly I'm inspired by the ancients," Schumm said recently. "I love Prehistoric African carvings, the works of ancient Greeks, Japanese and Chinese. I especially love Eskimo work."
The celebrated sculptor loves Eskimo work so much he once hitchhiked from his home state of Colorado to Alaska just to see native carvings.
"I wanted to see the TOTEM poles," he said. "The Alaskan Indians were fantastic artists."
Schumm, artist-in-residence since 2003, works with various hardwoods, stone, even metals. A studio in which he works at Westby Hall has pieces in various stages of completion, from an eight-foot-tall, stainless steel sculpture he calls "Aviary" to a solid, six-foot log of black locust...
