"The Rape of Sabina" Large Bronze Sculpture Bottega Romana Grand Tour

circa 1790s

About the Item

"The Rape of Sabina," large bronze group with brown patina, Roman workshop of the second half of the 18th century, circle of Francesco Righetti (Rome 1749-1819). The exceptional quality of this sculptural group takes us back to Rome in the second half of the 18th century, when the city was an essential destination for young European aristocrats arriving there on the Grand Tour. Wealthy young people were eager to be able to take home a piece of the eternal city, and so "souvenir" stores sprang up, where top-quality replicas of ancient masterpieces were made in precious materials (bronze, marble, semi-precious stones). Francesco Righetti, who had trained at the multifaceted workshop of silversmith and bronzesmith Luigi Valadier in the modeling and casting of small and large bronzes, opened his own studio in 1779 on Via della Purificazione and later, in 1789, a foundry located in Vicolo S. Isidoro, where he mainly made bronzes from ancient statuary. Unlike his colleagues, however, Righetti decided to combine the serial production of bronzes with the production of larger sculptures, as well as the production of desserts and various compositions in bronze and silver. Appreciated by princes and rulers all over Europe, he produced replicas of Roman statues, models by Giambologna, and statues of the Uffizi placed on bases made of different marbles; thanks to these important commissions, his name became so popular on the Roman and international markets that, in order to meet the numerous requests, he had to employ several sculptors and artisans in the workshop, including external collaborators, who were occupied in modeling and casting his works. Our group is not signed, but the exceptional quality, large size, and original red marble and black marble base place it very close to Righetti's workshop. The characters are chiseled with rich detail: just look at the expressive faces, hair, hands, feet, and nails; the brown patina is well preserved. The Rape of the Sabine is, arguably, one of the most famous sculptures on display in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. A work by Giambologna, it depicts an episode from ancient Roman history: a young Roman grabs and lifts a young Sabina. Below, an older man, probably the girl's father, attempts to block the kidnapper. The girl in fact tries to wriggle out of the way and spreads her arms in terror. His expression is clearly desperate. Same despair, out of a sense of helplessness, is on the face of the kneeling elderly man. The figures represent an episode from antiquity. For this reason and for stylistic reasons, the characters are depicted naked. The Rape of the Sabine Women is a mythological episode relating to the founding of Rome. It refers to a political and strategic event organized by Romulus. After founding Rome in 753 BCE, the ruler found himself in need of offering companions to his fellow citizens. The rat was consummated during the celebration of a massive spectacle organized to celebrate the city. A number of peoples participated, including the Ceninensians, Antemnates, Crustuminians, and Sabines. During the event at a nod from Romulus his men with weapons in their fists seized the unmarried women. Historical sources do not report the facts clearly. However, it seems that no one was killed, and the other guests returned to their cities. In turn, however, they later responded by attacking Rome but were defeated.
