Austrian (1861-1936)
Bronze, signed ‘Nam Greb’ & ‘B’ in a vase.
Height: 13½ inches
Width: 7¾ inches
Rare, large sized version of ‘Windy Day’, an erotic bronze figure of a young dancer, with fine cold painted decoration and excellent detail throughout. Her skirt lifts to reveal her naked body. Signed ‘Nam Greb’ and ‘B’ in a vase.
Franz Xavier Bergman was the son of Franz Bergman (1830-1894) who established The Bergman Foundry in the 1860’s. After his father’s death, Bergman continued the business developing the cold painted bronze groups including animals, oriental scenes and erotica. Bergman is arguably the most famous of the Viennese cold-painted bronze artists and with his great attention to detail and use of colours remains one of the most popular.

Franz Bergmann
There were many bronze foundries operating in Vienna in this period, but it was Bergman’s which became the most celebrated, working with a number of celebrated Viennese sculptors at the turn of the 20th Century, such as Bruno Zach, to produce designs for his famous bronze figures. Bergman bronzes are especially famous for having utilised a technique for decorating the bronzes called cold painting. Cold painting as a technique developed in Vienna in the late 19th Century, and involved the application of several layers of paint added to the bronze after firing. It was used to make fashionable collectors’ items. Bergman figures came in three main forms: animal figures, Orientalist sculptures, and erotic figures in the Art Nouveau style. His animal figures were often whimsical and humorous, and often satirical. They have become highly sought-after collectors’ items today. Bergman’s Orientalist sculptures are equally highly sought-after. He was producing these figures at a time when interest in the exotic lands of the Middle East and North Africa was at its peak among Europe’s artists and buyers.

Sculpture by Brazilian-born artist Elizabeth Freire. B&W photo is of Ms. Freire with renowned sculptor Etienne Martin at the Ecole Nationals des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Elizabeth Freire is a Brazilian-born, contemporary American artist. At the age of eighteen, she left Rio de Janeiro and moved to Paris to study sculpture at l’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, receiving her Diploma there in 1979 under the direction of Claude Viseux, Etienne Martin, and Cesar. During that time she worked as an apprentice at the Fonderie de France where she learned bronze technique and she also attended etching courses at l’Ecole de Montparnasse.
In 1976, she won a commission to make three life-size figures representing the printing company, “Les Imprimeries de Boulogne,” at the International Printing Fair in Paris. She spent 1977 in Aix-en-Provence where she carved the local stone of Rogne.
Returning to Paris, the painter Lutka Pink introduced her to Otero, Frans Krajcberg and Hajdu from whom she received valuable lessons. In 1978, she traveled to Brazil where she was invited to participate in the exhibit ‘A Century of Sculpture in Brazil’. She also met with the sculptor Sergio Camargo...
