About the Item

Bassorilievo in stucco con preziosa cornice originale in legno, 62,5x50 cm. Sul retro del bassorilievo è presente un’etichetta con un’iscrizione in francese che, per quanto lacunosa, ci offre importanti e precise notizie sulla sua storia: D’aprez [Mic]hel Ange par Jean Bap[tis]te Boucher[on] ancien professeur des bea[ux Arts]. Turin, [181]4 all’age de 72 ans. Ricaviamo quindi sia l’attribuzione a Giovanni Battista Boucheron sia la data 1814, che torna con la sua età ivi riportata, 72 anni, in quanto nato nel 1742. L’artista, che proseguì l’arte paterna dell’argenteria e si recò a Roma per perfezionarsi, ebbe importantissimi riconoscimenti pubblici nella sua città natale, Torino, tanto che nel 1763 Carlo Emanuele III lo nominò “orefice regio” e, sotto Vittorio Amedeo III nel 1775 diventò il direttore del Regio Laboratorio di Oreficeria. Nell’iscrizione, però, si fa riferimento alla sua seconda carriera, ovvero quando nel 1778, sempre sotto Vittorio Amedeo III, divenne professore e sottosegretario della neonata Reale Accademia di Pittura e Scultura. Sempre dall’etichetta si risale anche all’opera a cui Boucheron si è ispirato, ovvero la Deposizione dalla croce di Giovanni Della Porta, di cui un esemplare in alabastro si trova nel Castello Sforzesco, dalla collezione Torre e Tasso di Venezia, e una fusione in bronzo in Michigan, dalla collezione di John Pierpont Morgan. Qui viene riportata come di mano di Michelangelo, erronea attribuzione che circolava già da tempi antichi, finché i disegni dello scultore piemontese conservati al Museum Kunstpalast Dusseldorf non ne hanno ristabilito la paternità.
