Bambino

Dated 1905

About

Signed and dated "Giulio Monteverde / Roma 1905"White Carrara marble Whimsical and masterfully executed, this charming marble sculpture was created by the famed Italian naturalist sculptor Giulio Monteverde. The artist was renowned for his sculpture in the Romantic-Realist style, and the present work, entitled Bambino, is a fine example of the sense of naturalism that Monteverde conveyed through his figural subjects. Every detail of the infant figure is acutely portrayed, from his cherubic curls to the fabric of his gown and the pillow upon which he sits. Executed with a verisimilitude and warmth, it exemplifies the mastery of Monteverde over his craft. Born in Bistagno, Italy, in 1837, Giulio Monteverde studied at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti in Genoa between 1862 and 1865 under the sculptor Santo Varni. At the end of his studies, he won the prestigious Pensionato Artistico Triennale Prize, after which he moved to Rome. He became a professor there, while also executing a number of important commissions, including a number of significant public monuments. Perhaps his most recognized works are two angel funerary statues, The Resurrection Angel and The Angel of the Night, both of which have been widely copied.
