About the Item

A spiritually charged and visually iconic work by celebrated folk artist and preacher Rev. Howard Finster (1916–2001), titled “Angel Baby” and numbered 20,000,681. Created in 1991, this hand-painted wooden cut-out angel figure is mounted to a bracketed wooden base and bears all the hallmarks of Finster’s visionary style. The nude angel, with black hair and outstretched arms, is inscribed “Angel Baby” across the abdomen. The base and reverse are covered in Finster’s signature handwritten religious texts, referencing scripture and divine revelation. The reverse also features his hand-drawn bird motif, the phrase “Jesus Saves,” and the date and work number. The artist’s signature is located at the figure’s foot. Condition: Fair to good vintage condition. Structurally sound. Areas of wear and scuffing to the base, including partial loss of handwritten inscriptions, consistent with age and Finster’s materials. A quintessential example of Finster’s devotional folk art, this piece combines his visual intensity, handwritten scripture, and symbolic iconography—crafted during a prolific phase at Paradise Garden. A compelling addition to collections of outsider art, Americana, or religious expression.
