Aluminium Mixed Bronze
Hulu is bottle gourd in Chinese pronunciation. It is a vegetable with serpentine bottle-shaped. The bottle gourd also can be used as a container after it is dried. In Chinese culture, “hulu” in Chinese is the homonym for good fortune and successful career which is a common blessing sign too.
The artist Huang Yu Long “Hulu” is extended from another significant piece “The Beginner’s Mind”, one adult figure carries a kid figure on his shoulders. Two characters do not look at each other but they hold each other to become partners in this piece. This piece reveals the artist’s dualism in pursuit of a balance in his art career. Be an artist to create works that the public loves or works that are not easy to interpret? When a genuine kid and a successful man they work together, the artist found the answer.
“I poured all my personal emotions into this sweater-wearing character. In order not to affect the temperament with more information, I subtracted the character's face and completed the character with a jumpsuit and hoodie. Because of the characters I create, I use their actions and gestures to suggest a particular state and a power expressed by the characters themselves.” ~ Huang Yulong

Huang Yu Long is best known for his sculptures of faceless Laughing Buddha in hoodies, which portrays an exchange of Eastern tradition and Western contemporary style. Huang’s faceless Buddha sculpture is transformed into a break-dancer who wears crystal gloves and shiny decoration or poses hip-pop gestures. Sometimes the sculpture looks like a child. It is a symbol to keep reminding Huang himself to be a dream maker in his art. Huang was born in 1983. Graduated with Bachelor of Fine Art in the Sculpture Department of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. Huang is an emerging Chinese artist who has participated in several important exhibitions; for instance, Gwangju Biennale, Korea in 2013 and Shenzhen Biennale, Luohu Art Museum in 2018. He was selected “25 Contemporary Chinese Artists You Need to Know” by Complex, an American magazine for Pop culture.

Denny Haskew currently resides in Loveland, Colorado where he is actively engaged in the art industry as a sculptor. He received his degree from the University of Utah, then served two years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
