Lahcen Iwi est une étoile montante de l'art récupérateur marocain et mondial. Sa spécialité ? Sculptez de vieux pneus et transformez-les en véritables œuvres d'art. Il est de plus en plus reconnu pour la singularité de son art. Ce titulaire d'un diplôme en littérature anglaise et père d'une fille de 12 ans a commencé à travailler sa matière de prédilection dès l'âge de 8 ans. Il est l'un des rares artistes au monde à avoir développé ses propres techniques et démarche autour de la valorisation des pneumatiques. Lahcen ne manque pas de le lui rappeler chaque fois que l'occasion se présente. Son art, il le doit d'abord à son père Abdellah Iwi. « Je suis du signe Verseau et mon père fabriquait – à l'ancienne – des seaux et parfois des bocaux pour l'usage quotidien », nous confie-t-il en souriant. « Mon père a été mon premier professeur et ma première inspiration. Avant lui, mon grand-père faisait aussi le même métier", ajoute-t-il. Petit à petit, Lahcen développe et améliore ses procédés pour passer du façonnage d'objets utilitaires à la création d'œuvres finies. Il commence toujours par créer une structure en bois qu'il recouvre ensuite de chutes de pneus. Pour parvenir au résultat souhaité, le sculpteur utilise des outils et des roues de toutes sortes. Allant des pneus de tracteur les plus épais aux chambres à air les plus fines. Pour l'artiste, tout est bon pour varier les textures. Au final, le résultat est bluffant. La précision des formes et la qualité de la finition sont les signes édifiants du talent de Lahcen.
