La Parisienne: Art Nouveau Belle Epoque young lady with a gleam in here eye

ca 1900

About the Item

A lovely hand modelled sculpture in bas relief, depicting the head of a smiling young Parisian lady with a gleam in her eyes. The work dates from from the Belle Epoque, the art nouveau period, ie ca 1900. Sculpted in terracotta and patinated green, the sculpture bears a maker's mark on the verso as well as a plaque "J. Villeneuve" (for Jacques Villeneuve) on its custom made wooden support panel, from which it can be removed. Jacques Louis Robert Villeneuve was born in Bassan in the South of France. He studied with Gabriel-Jules Thomas (1824-1905) and Jean-Antoine Injalbert (1845-1933) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He lived mainly in Paris , where he married in 1919 , while maintaining links with his native region for which he produced numerous sculptures. Jacques Villeneuve made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1895. He then became a member of the Société libre des artistes français, where he was elected president of the sculpture section. He participated in the 1900 World's Fair , for which he sculpted the statue of Industrial Art adorning an entrance to the Paris Grand Palais , earning him a bronze medal. He became a professor of stone and marble sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts . He was awarded a first class medal in 1904. Today, sculptures of the artist are in the museums of Agde, Aniane, Bezier, Carcassonne, Montblanc, Montpellier and Paris. It is a sculpture, but as you can see, the wooden panel to which it can be attached allows the work to be hung on a wall like a 3 D painting. The size of the terracotta alone is 18 x 16 x 6 cm
