Little Maurizio is a limited-edition artwork created in 2020 by Spanish artist Javier Calleja, known for his distinctive style that blends a childlike aesthetic with subtle irony and humor. This figure embodies the essence of his work, featuring his signature character with oversized eyes and an innocent expression, yet carrying deeper artistic references.
The piece is crafted from a combination of PVC, glass, metal alloy, stainless steel, and EVA, giving it a high-quality finish. It stands approximately 12 cm tall and includes a metal stand for display stability. It was released in a limited edition of 3,000 units, presented in a "blind box" format, meaning buyers did not know which variant they would receive until opening it. In total, 101 different color combinations were produced, including an ultra-limited special version, adding to its exclusivity and collectibility.
The title, Little Maurizio, is a tribute to conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, renowned for his provocative and satirical creations. Inspired by Cattelan’s humor and irreverence, Calleja reinterpreted his figure in his own visual language, depicting him as a child with disproportionately large eyes and an expression that is both mischievous and innocent. This blend of admiration and parody is a recurring theme in Calleja’s work, playing with ideas of perception and innocence in contemporary art.
The figure was exhibited in prestigious art galleries, notably showcased in the "I did, I do, I will do" exhibition at AISHONANZUKA Gallery in Hong Kong, alongside other works by the artist. Its release generated significant interest in the contemporary art and collectibles market, cementing it as one of Calleja’s most popular and sought-after pieces. The combination of its charming aesthetic, its connection to art history, and its limited nature has made it an iconic work within Calleja’s production.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
This Spanish artist, born in Malaga in 1971, has a long career on his back. Almost 30 years creating that settled him as the sought after artist he is today in 2017.
After many exhibitions in his native country, Europe or US, showing his works in museums galleries and art fairs around the globe, the greater success came from Aisho Nanzuka Gallery in Hong Kong in 2017. “Hi” was how he entitled this solo exhibition and a presentation that was really well received by the Asian public. So well received that Calleja sold every artwork presented there and even got a waiting list of collectors to purchase his future work. A year after, the story repeats itself and the same huge success happens in Tokyo also with Aisho Nanzuka. And that was just the beginning.
Even he is easily tagged by many who say Calleja’s figures are inspired in anime or kawaii, that’s something that is not. Calleja claims his Mediterranean roots, the ones that got him painting as a kid inspired by Spanish cartoon artist Francisco Ibañez.
His art is based in portraits of disproportionated figures of big eyes and always using bright colors with minimal but solid strokes. Acid sentences are also a must that twist the images’ naive intention and definitely gives a second thought.
Even though his early works were created in a smaller scale, his current works are developed in large canvases and a few meters tall sculptures. Following his curiosity about different medias and techniques, Javier Calleja proves he is a tough working multidisciplinary artist. His studio, located where he was born, is much bigger today and has the best staff to help the artist fulfill this huge new projects.
Javier Calleja just can’t stop now. His schedule is filled with new projects, editions, exhibitions and collaborations. No wonder he will give us, at least, another 30 years of career.

Javier Calleja
Javier Calleja rose to art world prominence thanks to his instantly recognizable figurative works, which often feature squat, wide-eyed characters with exaggerated proportions. The Spanish artist’s practice spans painting, sculpture, and works on paper, as well as an array of editioned work and merchandise. Calleja has shown at galleries in Madrid, Barcelona, New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, among other major cities. A number of public collections throughout Spain have acquired his work. In March 2021, Calleja’s secondary-market record broke US$1 million for the first time, when his 2019 painting Waiting for a While sold for HK$8.8 million (US$1.1 million). Though he draws on personal experience and childhood memories to create his iconic characters, Calleja prefers not to explain his work, instead letting the observer “finish” the work with their own interpretations.
