About the Item

Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture, Marble Base, Brass Rod, Mixed Media, Feathers Since graduating from the University of Colorado in 2010, Pichaske has risen to attention in the art world. She was an assistant to artist Cristina Cordova, and has been an Artist in Residence at Art 342 in Fort Collins, Colorado, Watershed Center for the Ceramics Arts in Newcastle, Maine, and the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts in Asheville, North Carolina. She is also the recipient of the 2013 NCECA Emerging Artist Award, the 2011–2012 Taunt Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation, and has recently presented her work at the Smithsonian Institute. She is currently based in Washington D.C. About her work, she reflects: “The desire to create a believable sense of life pulls me forward as a maker. In my recent work, I sculpt animal forms out of inanimate materials that rely on touch to take shape, like clay, string, and hair. In the traditions of the grotesque and the uncanny, I am interested in the intersections between the familiar and strange, beautiful and repugnant, human and animal, alive and dead. My work investigates the possibility that perhaps in the shared space of these dualities, there can be understanding of and empathy for beings that are not human.” Selected Public Collections Kolva Sullivan Collection, Spokane, WA Archie Bray Foundation Permanent Collection, Helena, MT ART342 Collection, Fort Collins, CO Betty Woodman Study Collection, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
