Zō by Marcelo Martin Burgos - polished bronze, gold, diamond, animal, figurative

About the Item

Zō is a bronze sculpture by contemporary Argentinian artist Marcelo Martin Burgos, portraying an abstracted elephant, a reference subtly embedded in its title, which translates to elephant in Japanese. Characterized by a singular, brilliant-cut diamond eye weighing 0.25 carats, this striking detail infuses the piece with symbolic resonance. Created in collaboration with his daughter, the work weaves a personal and imaginative narrative through this evocative feature. Zō is part of a limited edition of 8 pieces, along with 4 artist’s proofs, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist, dimensions are 16 × 14 × 25 cm (6,3 × 5,6 × 9,9 in). Marcelo Burgos’ artistic universe is anchored in the world of childhood. Dreams and nightmares, inhabited by fantastical beings (monsters, dragons, and mythical creatures) fuel his imagination. His Monsters series draws inspiration from children’s drawings, cartoons, manga, as well as ancient African and Toltec sculptures. Rather than evoking fear, these figures, often adorned with golden surfaces, recall the aura of protective deities, exuding both warmth and mystery. Working primarily in bronze, Burgos is drawn to the medium for its timeless quality, adaptability, and especially for the reflective polish it offers, like a mirror. This mirrored surface invites the viewer into the work, transforming the sculptures into portals that evoke childhood’s wonder and intensity. “My goal is to summon the images and emotions that define the most imaginative, astonishing, and sometimes terrifying period of our lives; the golden age of childhood,” the artist explains. In many cultures, golden statuary is reserved for deities, this metal being associated with all that is sacred and spiritual. For Marcelo Martin Burgos, gold acquires a very important meaning in this respect, as the sacred is linked to childhood. The reflective aspect of the polished bronze is also a way of inviting the viewers on a journey into their childhood through the inclusion of their image in the work.
