"Why Fight When You Can Play?" pair of interactive bronze figures

1997-2017

About the Item

"Why Fight When you Can Play?" is a set of playful, interactive, figurative sculptures sold in pairs. Each pair consists of one standing and one crouching figure in cast bronze. Serious “toys”, these miniature bronzes are the perfect activity for a group of adults and children. Artist Noa Bornstein has seen people of all ages entranced with playing with her sculptures. She states, “The ‘players’ must have patience and skill to balance the sculptures—and I’m continually surprised by new ‘poses’ that adults and children invent. Even one pair has multiple balancing possibilities.” This artwork listing is for one pair. Dimensions given are for one pair stacked vertically. One standing figure is 3" tall and one crouching figure is 2” tall. Contact us -- or visit our separate listings for 2, 3, or 4 pairs -- to purchase more than one pair. $475 -- one pair; $950 -- two pairs; $1300 -- 3 pairs; $1650 -- 4 pairs. Choice of brown, black, or green patina. You can mix patinas in each pair. This is an unlimited edition—no edition number. To balance, a level and stable surface must be used. Please watch the video for just a few playtime possibilities! Brooklyn, New York, artist Noa Bornstein describes herself as “a draw-er”. Many of her sculptures begin as a quick drawing or impression - from memory, from dreams, or from life itself. “Watching a man walking down the street, I take out my little pad and am compelled to capture something of his gait, the rhythm, shape, whatever attracts my attention,” says Bornstein. Figurative sculptor and painter Noa Bornstein was born in San Rafael, California, and grew up mostly in Los Angeles. She has lived and worked in New York City since 1986. Bornstein holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of California at Santa Cruz. Her sculptures have been shown in many indoor and outdoor venues, including at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art in Florida, the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, and Grounds for Sculpture, Toad Hall Gallery in New Jersey. Public installations include Lakeland, Florida, sponsored by the Polk Museum of Art, TriBeCa Park in Manhattan, as well as several parks in New Jersey and Baltimore. In 2009, the Walter Randel Gallery in New York City exhibited Bornstein’s sculptures as part of a group show integrated with ancient sculptures from around the world. Her work has been featured in Art in America and in Artnews, among many other publications.

Reclining Figure with Bird bronze pedestal sculpture
By John Denning
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Commissioned to create a life-sized reclining figure, John Denning made two maquettes during a stay in a medieval hamlet in France. This is the cast of one of these wax maquettes, finished in a dark bronze patina. Smooth surfaces contrast with highly textured areas, as the figure seems to emerge from a block heavily worked with drips and carvings. As if a ruin herself, the figure’s arm and leg seem partially eroded away, while a bird lighted...
