About the Item

Grey Amphora is a glass fiber and reinforced concrete sculpture by Czech contemporary artist Pavlína Kvita, notable for its distinctive surface details—unusual within the artist’s broader body of work. Dimensions are 185 × 140 × 90 cm (72.8 × 55.1 × 35.4 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity and it is part of a very limited edition of only two pieces—one in grey and one in red. For this series of amphora-inspired sculptures, Kvita drew from the shapes and aesthetics of ancient vessels, particularly those from Greek and Cretan antiquity. While the outlines of her pieces echo traditional amphoras, her focus shifts to the handles, which she transforms through inventive repetitions and variations. These modifications elevate the form beyond its utilitarian origins and imbue it with a purely sculptural essence. On a more personal level, the artist sees these pieces as living beings, explaining: “The ‘amphoras’ are based on an unspecified mystery hidden inside the container. This mystery cannot be told or broadcast, because my amphoras have no throat.” Kvita’s artistic language emerges from an intimate, introspective process, producing enigmatic sculptures that feel simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Her figures, whether anthropomorphic or zoomorphic, are silent entities—timeless and contemplative. They assert their presence with powerful, fluid lines that verge on abstraction, combining poise and vitality. Each piece is the result of a continuous creative cycle involving construction, deconstruction, and transformation, as Kvita explores the boundless potential of form and material.
