About the Item

Large white Carrara marble bust depicting a young woman with her hair adorned with leaves and bunches of grapes, signed "Fedi" on the back. Originally from Viterbo but a Florentine by adoption, Pio Fedi trained at the Florentine Academy with Lorenzo Bartolini and at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, where he studied with Pietro Tenerani. However, it was in the Tuscan capital that he formed his very personal vision of art. During the years when Florence was the capital, he attained international fame, particularly appreciated by a large clientele, especially foreigners, who assiduously frequented his studio, admiring not only the large models of his monumental works intended for transposition into marble, such as the Monument to General Manfredo Fanti and Tuscan Civilization, but especially his small salon statues illustrating love allegories or subjects from Dante's repertoire, such as Nello della Pietra and Pia de' Tolomei. Greatly admired by Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany, he divided his work between early purism and ideal realism to which he devoted himself until his death. His major works include "Radiant Liberty," created for the funeral monument of Giovanni Battista Niccolini, erected in the Basilica of Santa Croce, which inspired French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi for his Miss Liberty, a famous symbol of New York City, and "The Rape of Polyxena," a monumental marble group displayed in the nearby Loggia della Signoria. The latter was recently the subject of an exhibition following the acquisition of the terracotta model by the Uffizi Gallery. His studio, the former church of Santa Chiara on Via dei Serragli, bequeathed by the artist to the city of Florence, along with all his working tools, numerous works and some models, is commemorated by a plaque on the facade. Our bust belongs to the artist's second period, that of ideal realism, and bears many similarities to some of his works, especially "Liberty." Like most of his works, the bust is large in size. The bust is in excellent condition, intact and never restored. Only a small restoration on the base is noted. The bust already has a CERTIFICATE of EXPORT from the Fine Arts and can be shipped immediately. Dimensions H 77 cm L 47 cm D 26 cm
