Originally from Tapachula, Chiapas Mexico, he was born in 1962 into a family dedicated directly or indirectly to arts and crafts. His deep artistic vocation led him to begin painting at 14 years of age. In 1976 he began his studies at the National School of Artistic Initiation no.2, INBA-SEP; In 1977 he entered the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving La Esmeralda (INBA), and in 1980 he obtained his first scholarship in "Production Artistic "of the National Direction of Plastic Arts of the INBA.
Before graduating from the National School he began his professional life participating in various competitions, underlining his presence in the Second Annual Exhibition of Plastic Arts Museum of the National Palace of Fine Arts (1980) as a finalist in the New Figuration and Neoexpressionism section. Likewise, in 1981 it was presented at the Second National Encounter of Young Art, and in 1982 it won the special prize in the First Drawing Biennial of the National Exhibition of Plastic Arts of INBA, calling attention to specialized criticism, particularly that of the Master Raquel Tibol, and the legendary Mexican videographer Fernando Gamboa. He made his first solo exhibition in 1983 at the Sloanne Racotta Gallery in Mexico City.
In 1984 he presented an individual exhibition at the Reynold Kerr Soho Gallery (New York, NY) and the Misrachi Gallery (Mexico, D.F.). Participate in a host of group exhibitions in various museums and galleries, mainly in Mexico, Central America and the United States. In 1988 he presented an individual exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City
entitled Anatomies, which was later presented in other venues such as the Museum of Monterrey (Monterrey, N.L), and the Regional Museum of Guadalajara (Guadalajara, Jal).
In 1991 he exhibited at the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey (MARCO) called Myth and Magic in America: The Eighties. In 1995, the National Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts organized a retrospective exhibition of his work entitled Postmodernity, followed by intense activity in different galleries and art fairs throughout the Americas.

In 2000 he participated prominently in the group exhibition Soleils Mexicans in the Petit-Palais museum, Paris, France, obtaining good reviews.
Since 2004, he has been making a particularly rich group of individual exhibitions.
His deep aesthetic research, as well as his tireless production power, allow him to develop a work in painting, photography, sculpture and assemblies that were presented first, in 2006 at the Museo de la Fundación Amparo, (Puebla, Mexico) in an exhibition called Saturn in the world of paradoxes, which was later presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey, MARCO (Monterrey, Mexico) in 2007, calling
immediately the attention of the specialized world criticizes it and of art.
In 2007 he participated in the Pinta NY collective exhibition at the Metropolitan Pavilion, NY, USA.
The unique relationship of classical structures and their fusion with the evolved forms of the plastic language of the 20th century, has led him to develop a unique style that we could call neo-modernist, which is condensed in a personal investigation about four masterpieces of the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), reinterpreting the easel painting done by the master of muralism in his last two
years of life.
In 2009, after studying a masterpiece by Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco that corresponds to the easel work of his last year of life entitled El Desmembrado, he develops a set of variations from a perspective of current Latin America
Cortázar was based mainly on a painting entitled "El dismembrado", in which he worked a number of important variations that will be consolidated in an individual exhibition entitled
Los Desmembrados, which was presented at the National Museum of Art, MUNAL (Mexico, D.F.).
Robert Cortázar is a Mexican conceptual artist. He likes to play with abstract elements in contrast with an academic figuration, he paints with an almost monochromatic palette that invades with touches of bright colors and balances the lights and shadows to make contrasts.
Cortázar began to experiment with the deformation of the human body analyzing the lines and the most expressive points of the paintings of the master José Clemente Orozco, under this influence, he modified the compositions and managed to emphasize the rhythm of the human figure beyond the traditional.
Currently, Cortázar is among the most outstanding contemporary artists in Latin America and his work has been recognized worldwide, he is known for painting and sculpture.
