Ancient Greek Hellenistic Marble Head of an Athlete

Circa 300 BC

$75,000

About

This powerful piece of Hellenistic sculpture is full of pathos. It depicts the idealised head of an athlete, with hair arranged in short locks around a broad forehead and expressive, deeply set eyes. Athletic prowess was highly valued by the Ancients. Participating in sports competitions required months of training, and athletes were expected to uphold values of moral excellence, sportsmanship and humility. Upon their return home, victors would be celebrated as heroes and enjoyed long-lasting fame and honours. "Grant him gracious respect both amongst citizens and foreigners, since he walks a straight path that spurns hubris, having learnt clearly what the upright minds of his noble ancestors have decreed for him." Pindar (518-438 BC), Seventh Olympian Ode Provenance: From the collection of Heinrich Forkarth, Austria, acquired prior to 1970.
