About the Item

'Seated Nude', Paris, Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Salon D'Automne, Woman Artist, LACMA, GGIE, Jeu de Paume Signed 'Lloyd' for Caroline Lloyd (American, 1875-1945), created circa 1935 and impressed with foundry stamp, 'C. Valsuani Cire Perdue', for Claude Valsuani Fonderie, Paris. Please note: Video has not been color corrected; for correct color, refer to photographs. Born in Indiana, Caroline Lloyd first studied at the Convent of Notre Dame in Milwaukee. She later moved to Paris where she studied under Robert Wierick at the Ecole des Arts Appliqué à l’Industrie and, subsequently, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. In France, Lloyd was made welcome in Modernist artistic circles and rapidly achieved both commercial and critical success. She exhibited widely, including at the Salon D'Automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Beaux Arts among numerous other ateliers and galleries. At the Paris International Exposition of 1937, Lloyd's was awarded a medal and the exhibited work was purchased by the French government for the permanent collection of the Jeu de Paume Museum. In 1939, Caroline Lloyd was made an Associate Member of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, a rare honor for a non-French artist. Returning to Los Angeles on the outbreak of war, Lloyd continued to sculpt and exhibit successfully as a member of the California Art Club, including at the Golden Gate International Exhibition (1939), Stendhal Gallery (1941) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1942, 1944). Her retrospective was held at the Los Angeles Art Association (1945-6). Caroline Lloyd is well-listed in all relevant reference works including Who Was Who in American Art, the Dictionary of American Sculptors, the Biographical Encyclopedia of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers and Hughes' Dictionary of California artist.
