About the Item
Sokol-Athlete by Jan Vítězslav Dušek is a masterpiece of athletic dynamism, national pride, and sculptural ingenuity. Its exuberant motion, expressive anatomy, and symbolic power make it a defining work of Czech modernist sculpture. Created in 1924, this dark patinated bronze sculpture embodies the energy of victorious athleticism and draws deep inspiration from the Sokol movement, a movement that celebrated physical discipline and Czech national identity.
The athlete, depicted in a semi-nude state, assumes a triumphant posture, arms raised in an exalted gesture, as if reaching the pinnacle of a long-fought struggle. His precarious balance on one foot, positioned atop a geometric Cubist-inspired base, creates palpable tension and conveys an impression of perpetual motion. The influence of Antoine Bourdelle, Dušek’s mentor during his studies in Paris, is evident in the anatomical precision and psychological intensity of the figure.
The sculpture was created in Tábor and cast at the renowned Franta Anýz foundry in Prague. It gained international recognition when exhibited at the XV Venice Biennale in 1926. It was also awarded a bronze medal at the Art Competition of the Paris Olympic Games in 1924 and a silver medal at the Paris Salon in 1925, solidifying Dušek’s prominence in the world of modern sculpture.
Sokol-Athlete is more than just a representation of sport; it is a statement on victory, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of human excellence. Its expressive movement, sculptural mastery, and rich symbolic undertones make it a monument not only to physical strength but to the indomitable aspiration of humanity.

Spirit of Gravity - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this thoughtful sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak, the gestures of a female figure, head bent, arms wrapped, are captured in bronze. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and green-black patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. This piece is number three in an edition of eight.
“The ineffable, vital qualities of the human spirit (is what I’m trying to communicate.)” - Richard Tosczak
Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

The artist was born, raised and trained in Italy. During one of his exhibits (at San Marcos in Rome) the Director of a New York Gallery asked him to come to New York to work for him. The American Consul, before issuing his visa, asked Spampinato to create a bust of him. In exchange, the Consul paid for his passage on the boat to New York. In New York, he worked with his brother Clemente Spampinato who is a well known sculptor as well.
After moving to Chicago in 1954, he discovered that there was no foundry in the Midwest that could cast his bronzes. So, he opened his own foundry called the Spampinato Art Foundry, casting in the lost wax process. He also started his own private school (Spampinato Art Workshop, Ltd) and did some teaching at the University of Chicago and conducted seminars at Lawrence University in Kansas.
Many of his own works are pictured and cataloged in Volumes 2 & 3 of Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, 1800-1930 by Harold Berman.
Between 1959 and 1967, Spampinato recast a number of Charles M Russell...
