Jean Coulon
Jean Coulon - Aegina and Zeus Bronze Statue

About the Item

Aegina was one of the daughters of the river god Asopus and his wife, the river nymph Metope. The couple had many daughters, and most of them became the object of desire of either Zeus or Apollo. Aegina caught the eye of Zeus, but she was unwilling to be his consort. Refusing to be denied, Zeus transformed himself into a great eagle and abducted the girl, taking her to the island now known as Aegina, then called Oenone. This elegant patinated bronze figural statue depicts the dynamic moment where Zeus steals Aegina. She is thrown off balance, about to fall into Zeus' great eagle wings that cascade over the statues composition, creating a multitude of beautiful shapes and dramatic shadows as its viewed from multiple vantage points.  Signed on base:  Coulon French  19th Century  Bronze 36.25" x 19" x 16"

Located in New York, NY
An Exquisite bronze figural pairing of two putti with butterfly wings. One putti holds a bow, while his counterpart cowers behind him. A dynamic piece of fabric hovers over the grouping, showcasing expertly modeled drapery, embellishing the composition of the piece. The figural grouping and pose is base off of a painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1925 - 1905), a french academic painter who created realistic genre paintings of modernized mythological scenes. Itasse studied under Belloc and Jacquot and exhibited at the Salon from 1864 to 1893. The artist worked on multiple public commissions for the Louvre (Retour de la Chasse), l Opera (Philidor, Puccini, Cambert), the Trocadero Palace (L Astronomie) and Hotel de Ville de Paris. He specialized in busts, portrait reliefs of contemporary personalities, also sculpting a number of genre and allegorical works, such as The Kiss, The Birth of Love, Astronomy and Science.
