Steven Young Lee
Steven Young Lee is an American artist, born in 1975. He is the Resident Artist Director of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. A Chicago native, he received his MFA degree in ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Lee has lectured and taught at several universities globally. In 2004, he created a new body of work, as part of a one-year cultural and educational exchange fellowship, in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China. His work has been exhibited in China, Canada and throughout the United States and is held in numerous public and private collections. Lee maintains an active studio practice, rooted in both functional and sculptural ceramics. His current work examines cultural references and how individuals draw realities based on experience and environment. Through his sculpture and vessels, Lee challenges preconceptions of style, form, symbolism, superstitions and identity.

Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms.
“I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms.
