About the Item

Blott Kerr Wilson is the leading shell artist today. Her career to date sees her work found in follies, shell-houses and interiors worldwide. Dividing her time between restorations of shell houses, she works predominantly to commission creating either traditional designs or her single species creations that have a distinctly contemporary feel. In this piece the shell is from the Abalone family, commonly knowns as 'Asses Ears', found in abundance around the Indo Pacific Ocean. The meat is eaten by natives and the empty shells are sold to a shell dealer. By careful and deliberate placement the artist has ensured the irridescent surface of the shells catches the light and their form creates mesmeric contrast and texture. The movement through the work is dynamic, and when viewed in person the shells almost appear to move as ones perspective on them shifts with the ambient light. Clients of Blott's work understandably refer to an attraction to the flow and serenity of it, causing them to think of the sea, as though a wave has just swept over the piece, instilling a deep sense of calm. It is also an advantage that the shells do not fade with time and therefore can be placed in full sunlight without fear of damage over time. Please note that the artist can be commissioned to repeat this work on any scale, although very large areas (such as a current commssion for a 12 square metre wall in a pool house) would be carried out in situ, irrespective of country or location. The precise placement of shells will differ, and the frame can be painted in a colour to suit requirement, rendering each piece unique in its own right. The artist is very open commissions for personal interpretations of traditional and contemporary shellwork. Please note the dealer is the appointed agent/enabler for the artist and will respond on behalf of the artist at her request, particularly if she is focussed on a commission at the time of enquiry.
