About the Item
“Specimen“ is a mixed media piece by artist Heather Nicol, and measures 16x13x3“. Part of a body of work known as Salon, this particular assemblage is comprised of frame, faux fur, paper, pins and electric picture light, on board. The artist continues her reflection on domestic materials and their relationships to display and social identity. Specimen includes a picture light with the wiring enveloped in an umbilical cord-like fabric casing. Very presentable. An elegant artifact as evocative sculpture, Specimen interrogates the histories embedded in these objects and materials, while carrying on an aesthetic tradition through transformation into a work of art.
Heather Nicol is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes immersive sound installation, small-scale discrete object making, and independent curating. Her large site-specific interventions explore the architectural, sonic, historic and operational conditions across a wide range of locations. These include concourse atriums, rail terminus, lobbies, a theatre, a public school building, a theme park, and a sweat shop. An interest in points of connection and intersection link these threads.
Nicol has created projects in Canada, the US, Germany and France. She completed her Honors BFA at The School of Visual Art, NYC, her MA at New York University, and her MFA at OCAD University, Toronto.
