About the Item
Artist Statement:
I work primarily in porcelain, using high-fire gas reduction methods. Each piece begins with a mold I made from a discarded shell I scavenged while walking the north end of Sandy Hook. Although these animals may seem indistinguishable in nature, my goal is to make each crab unique in its design. Over time, they began to take on motifs akin to muscle cars, with added flames, detailing, and hood scoops. I saw their slick, simple shape as the perfect canvas to elevate them as the badasses of the estuary.
Needless to say, their numbers have been dwindling. They are harvested for their magical blood, used for medical purposes, and their environment is increasingly threatened by climate change and human disregard. Still, I have hope they can survive yet another major extinction, as they have throughout their 450-million-year history.
