About the Item
"Record Player" by Jerome Ferretti, Detroit muralist, painter and sculptor, is a genuine Symphonic Record Player with built-in speakers that Jerome has re-purposed, decorated and painted re-creating the record player into a sculpture with musical themes, a unique one-of-a-kind work of art. His captured characters dance both in, on and about the record player's case.
Jerome Ferretti is a member of the original Cass Corridor artists. His murals adorn many of Detroit's eateries. Most recently, he created a mural for the premiere Wholefoods store In Detroit’s Midtown located at Woodward and Mack Avenue.
Following in his family’s footsteps, he became a Journeyman Bricklayer; at the same time teaching himself the basics of drawing and watercolors. Maturing as an artist, Ferretti incorporated the techniques he learned as a skilled trade with further refinement of his fine art skills attending the Center (now College) for Creative Studies. Other College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), and John Louis Krieger (American Modern) and William Girard (American Modern.)
Jerome also attended Wayne State University located in Midtown Detroit and boasting an extensive number of prestigious alumni including Arthur Danto, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Tyree Guyton, Hughie Lee-Smith, Philip Levine, Casey Kasem and Helen Thomas.
A residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, Nebraska during 1991 launched a new phase under the mentorship of world-famous ceramist Jun Kaneko. Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts was founded by artists Jun Kaneko, Tony Hepburn, Lorne Falke and Ree Schonlau in 1981. This combination of fine arts and trades skills learned by Ferretti lead him to create a unique body of work that is expressed through watercolors, oils, pastels, architectural pieces and metal, brick and ceramic sculpture.
Ferretti has many notable commissions and public works of art, including: “Seeds” in the Ford Parking structure in Downtown Detroit and “Monumental Kitty” (completed in 2010) in the Corktown neighborhood. His architectural pieces are in private residences and commercial properties statewide. He has collaborated with artists Robert Sestock, Eric Fogle, Tom Rudd and Matthew Blake. Ferretti has also taught Ceramics at Wayne State Charter School, and Ceramics and Photoshop at the College for Creative Studies.

"El Tren" is a whimsical and playful rendition of a train. It is beautifully glazed in various colors.
This particular ceramic was from the collection of Jane and Richard Knight’s Estate. Jane Knight was a famous fiber and textile artist. Richard was a photographer who worked for Eliel Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The Knights and Girard became close friends and it was Girard who gifted “Santa Cruz De Las Huertas Jalisco” to the Knights. Alexander Girard left his personal collection to the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, NM. The Girards eventually amassed a collection of more than 106,000 objects from across the globe. Their 1978 gift of this collection to the Museum of International Folk art quintupled the size of their collection and prompted the construction of a new wing, which opened in 1982 and houses a mere 10% of the Girard Collection in the permanent exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond, which was designed by Alexander Girard himself. This collection includes numerous multiples and is notable for its great breadth, including traditional arts, popular arts, and paper ephemera. “I believe we should preserve this evidence of the past, not as a pattern for sentimental imitation,” Girard once said, “but as nourishment for the creative spirit of the present.” Indeed, folk art was an important inspiration for Girard’s design work.

"Art belongs everywhere from cruise ships to churches" This has been the mantra of Helen Webber since she began her career in the 1970’s creating hundreds of art works for public spaces throughout the United states and abroad. It was her strongly held belief that art can touch the spirit of many more people than those whose art experiences are limited to the halls and walls of museums and galleries. Her bold and richly hued art works executed in a wide variety of media, such as tapestry, glass, metal wood and clay have been installed in universities, corporations, medical facilities, cruise ships, hotels, religious spaces, community and civic centers and even in a train station. Over the years many architects and interior designers have collaborated with Helen Webber finding that her work enhanced their designed environments, giving her the opportunity to create art for well known corporations as well as multitudes of residences. It is the tapestries that she is best known for, and it is this medium that dominates the largest body of her work, which was first introduced to the design world in the mid 1970's. The tapestries utilize a fabric collage technique combining an array of designer upholstery fabrics such as velvets, brocades, worsteds, jacquards, mohair, hand woven woolens, among many others. Yarns of all kinds are integrated into the tapestries surrounding the edges of each fabric piece.
