About the Item

"Kryptonite Wares" is a clever and humorous collection of both superfluous and everyday objects purchased from the Dollar Store. It is a wry comment by the artist on the overabundance of cheap items in 21st century life that while being non-essential finds an audience that is comforted by these insignificant colorful items. DeSloover has a strong connection with color and places an intense interpretation on both “Red” as a self-identifier and Chartreuse “Kryptonite” as her inner venerable self. Throughout her works she maintains a fascination with what she terms the “domestication of color.” DeSloover’s obsession with house paint as a medium contains both an aesthetic and a literary interest. Fostered early by her own name, Rosemary, amplified by red cheeks and red hair, and reinforced by her initials, RED (synchronicity everywhere!) The critic, Sarah Rose Sharp has said of DeSloover that she “is drawn to identify with colors and their names, extrapolating layers of meaning from her ready-made palette—the choice to limit herself to preexisting colors was an important subset of DeSloover’s discipline around found objects. This practice has further evolved to include found objects paired with colors/names as a form of portraiture.” Sharp continues her analysis of DeSloover:” From here, colors and their attendant meanings have generated several significant arcs in DeSloover’s work. “Kryptonite”— a neon green that was first adopted in her portrait of her teacher and major influence, light artist James Turrell—has become a signifier of protective energy, which DeSloover employed in her piece Protecting Paris (2012), a collaboration with poet Darcy Brandel, and even in her daily wardrobe, depending on her need for protection against influential or threatening forces. Kryptonite, in DeSloover’s world, is the single weakness of Superman (a persona that she had lovingly attached to Turrell due to his charisma and force of personality), but she is quick to mention that she really thinks of the “Superman” more in the Nietzschean sense.” This work was shown at the Detroit Orchestra Hall in 2019.

"Red Harmony" Abstract, Geometric, Colors, Bright Red, Green
By William Antonow
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Red Harmony" is an abstract painting that does have a sculptural presence in the shapes of the red areas. The lush greens blend various shades into a background that while it does contrast sharply with the reds, it is not in conflict. The overall effect of this work is dynamic in its energy while at the same time harmonious. One of the original Cass Corridor artists from the 1960s William Antonow studied at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies) and at Wayne State University, where he received his BFA (1967) and MA (1970.) Antonow’s first one-person show at the Willis Gallery in 1971, represented a radical departure from his early work – abstract bronzes shown at the Michigan Artists exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1969 and 1970. A founding member of the Willis, Antonow publicized his exhibition with a cryptic invitation stating, “art isn’t anything.” Echoing the challenge implicit in the exhibition announcement, the works in the show consisted of precariously balanced piles of such non-art materials as wood crates and barrels, corrugated paper or cardboard, cellophane and beer cans. These brash, paint-slathered juxtapositions of salvaged objects were perhaps the first example of the nascent “tough art” aesthetic of the Cass Corridor. (Both Gordon Newton’s wood constructions and Bob Sestok’s crude “radio wheels” first appeared in 1972.) In 1975, in the inaugural group exhibition of the Willis at its new location in the Fisher Building...
