Vasa Velizar Mihich
RED PRISM

1988

About the Item

Vasa Mihich is a renowned Los Angeles-based artist known for his sleek, colorful and captivating acrylic sculptures. He is a Senior Professor of Design at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he has taught color theory for many years. For nearly 50 years he has been working in acrylics, whether on canvas or through sculpture. His sculptures, with their different geometric planes suspended in acrylic, are dynamic and endlessly fascinating. Caviar20 is excited to be offering this impactful and impressive desktop sculpture. “Red Prism” features a strong palette of electric cobalt blue contrasted with vibrant tones of red. As with the best of Mihich's work, the geometric form and color distort as the viewer moves around the sculpture. The sharp layers of complementary color slant and expand when viewed from the side, revealing a surprising illumination of purple. This minimalist sculpture is a paradigm of Mihich’s ongoing investigations of light, color, and negative space. These key optical characteristics are present throughout his oeuvre. After dedicating years of his career to education, Mihich now commits himself fully to his studio in Los Angeles where he continues to push the potential of sculpture with the acrylic medium. "Red Prism" USA, 1988 Acrylic Incised signature and dated by the artist. 9"H 5"W 1.75"D Very good condition.

  • Larry Zox "Teal Top" Drawing, 1966
    By Larry Zox
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Larry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of 20th century abstraction in America. Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre. Zox moved to New York City and established his reputation by the mid 1960's. His studio was located on 20th Street and he was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz artists, bikers, and boxers. Zox was one of the most successful practitioners of hard-edge or geometric abstraction and not surprisingly was championed by Frank Stella, amongst others. By the mid 1960's, Zox arrived at his most recognized style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns, which were often realized on raw canvas. Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960's and early 1970's are arguably the most recognizable works from his oeuvre. Fittingly he had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1973, that focused on such work. Today, numerous museums including the Whitney, the MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan all have examples of his work from this era in their permanent collections. While Zox is not directly associated with the Op Art movement, many of his works by nature of their patterns and colors create visual illusions in dimensionality. In "Mosaic" the kelly green band that intersect the composition helps give the overall work an appearance of a slanted stair. Frequently the artist seems to be inviting the viewer to find pattern within the work. In "Mosaic" we have both areas of synergy and dissonance. Can you find them? Questions about this piece? Guido Molinari (1933-2004) is one of Canada's most beloved abstract painters. Among his accomplishments, Molinari represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1968. A disciple of Barnett Newman, Molinari's most iconic works depict alternating bands or blocks of solid color. While Molinari is not immediately associated with international movements such as "Hard-Edge Abstraction", Minimalism, or Op Art; his work can be understood in relation to either. (With this in mind, it would be interesting to compare and contrast Molinari with Gene Davis, another artist famous for stripes). Molinari was one of the key figures (along with Yves Gaucher...
