The theme of the hand carving to this 19th century meerschaum pipe is that of a full bodied boar in full stride outside of a brick house with foliage above. A floral bouquet is carved in high relief to the underside of the bowl. The rough hewn long stem is characteristic of wood from a hard root tree; the stem ends in a horned mouthpiece. Meerschaum refers to the mineral sepiolite which was soft enough to carve with, yet hard enough to ward off the ill effects of the heat and tar, both in the long term aesthetics to the bowl, and to provide the short term pleasure of a "cool" smoke. This mineral is predominantly found in Turkey and is derived from fossilized remains of sea urchins. The 19 1/2" overall length of the pipe makes it one of the longer pipes you'll find, and along with the meerschaum bowl and hard wooden stem, both of these factors provided ample opportunity for the smoke to cool down before reaching the smoker. Pipes of this length are called "Churchwarden Pipes" and were made so that those smoking a pipe for a long period of time, like readers, could do so without getting smoke in their eyes. Worth noting is the date "1856" carved into the side of the bowl, obviously to commemorate an event; possibly the Crimean war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, which ended in that year and concluded with the Treaty of Paris in March of the same year. Probably one of a kind, this very rare hand painted lithograph image is advertising the world famous cigar and maker. I have never seen this image before in all of the years I've been dealing in advertising. This grandiose lithographed image has it all, with copious scenes and participants. Let's start with what is being advertised; as printed at the top "Hoffman House Banquet Cigar". Chicago tobacconist, Edward Hoffman, started his cigar business with a small family run operation in 1857. By 1868 he had blended the finest tobaccos available and soon was known to be the maker of the finest cigars in the nation. His signature risque image of "Nymphs and Satyr" embodied his packaging and advertising, as evidenced by the over the top bar scene here in this lithograph with the nymph scene appearing on the wall to the right. The actual bar room lounge depicted here in this Hoffman lithograph is the late 19th century New York famed "Hoffman House Bar", with all of it's excesses and barroom accoutrements, gracing the walls and furnishings. Listed is a fine quality American, Art Nouveau sterling silver match safe in repousse relief, featuring an Indian chief with elaborate full regalia headdress decoration. It has a hinged top, and a nicely detailed match strike to the bottom. A monogram with non discernible initials completes the decoration on the reverse side (could be "J.T.L."---just a guess). It is marked "Sterling" on the inside storage compartment where matches are kept (see image). The image is indicative, and exactly the same as an Unger Brothers pattern, so probably by them. Unger Brothers of Newark, New Jersey sometimes sold their molds to the likes of Gorham and other nearby silver makers, so could also be by one of those silver makers. The American Indian was still a popular subject at the turn of the century; probably circa 1905 manufacture. Dimensions: 2 5/16" high x 1 3/4" wide x 1/2" deep This match safe is in excellent all original condition with no restoration of any kind. There are no dents. It has a few minor scratches. Listed is a fine quality Art Nouveau sterling silver match safe in repousse relief. It is typical of risque bar items used at the turn of the century; depicting as the central theme on one side, an attractive nude female being adored and pursued by a multiplicity of male suitors with an elaborate floral design framing the subject. The other side is either etched monogrammed (looks like "EBS Jack" but difficult to make out letters) or filigree design, again, framed with identical elaborate floral design. It is marked "Sterling" on the inside storage compartment where matches are kept (see image). Of American manufacture (no identifying mark) although companies like Gorham, Tiffany and Unger were known to produce such objects. This match safe is in excellent all original excellent condition with no restoration of any kind. Listed is a quality presidential match safe which crosses over between match safes and American political patriotic items. It was produced at the turn of the century, probably during president McKinley's administration 1897-1901. McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish–American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals. He was assassinated on September six, 1901, and succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt. Quite possibly this match safe was a commemorative item, signifying that event and President McKinley. Obviously, of American manufacture, it is in excellent all original condition with no restoration. Listed is a quality match safe with the theme "Love's Repose", which translates to "the tranquillity of being in love". It is typical of risque bar items used at the turn of the century. Manufactured by "The Whitehead and Hoag Co." of Newark, New Jersey in 1906, this silver plated match safe was called "The Bar-Keeper's Friend" made to advertise for the "George Wm. Hoffman Co." of Indianapolis, Indiana. As stated on the back of the actual hard celluloid covered match safe, they were a manufacturing company who produced a product for cleaning metal bar fixtures and utensil items. To entice it's use, a beautiful nude graces the front. She is sitting on a rock amongst flowers with her feet wading in the water.
