A. Lange & Söhne Pocket Watches

German

With a watchmaking legacy that has its origins in the early 19th century, German brand A. Lange and Söhne has created a wide range of iconic watches such as the Lange 1 and is renowned around the world for its chronographs and impeccably polished and elegant aesthetics.

A. Lange and Söhne’s story begins with Ferdinand Adolph Lange, who, at the age of 15, apprenticed with master watchmaker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes in Saxony. In the late 1830s, Gutkaes and his young apprentice developed the Five-Minute Clock for the Semper Opera House in Dresden, considered by historians as a masterpiece in Saxon clockmaking artistry.

Following his apprenticeship with Gutkaes, Lange traveled through France, England and Switzerland before returning to Germany to work at a watch manufactory in Glashütte. Lange’s watchmaking talents began to gain recognition by Europe’s wealthy nobility. Among them was Russian Czar Alexander II, who was so enamored by Lange’s pocket watches that he gifted Lange a diamond scarf pin.

In 1845, Lange founded his watch company, and in 1868, his sons Richard and Emil became the business’s co-owners upon his retirement. Both brothers were talented in their own right. Richard, an innovative designer, contributed to dozens of watchmaking patents. Meanwhile, Emil achieved world fame for his Century Tourbillon watch, which he presented at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris

Throughout the early 20th century, the Lange family’s watchmaking firm flourished. After World War II, the manufactory was shut down and nationalized. However, in 1990, Ferdinand’s great-grandson Walter Lange resurrected his family’s watchmaking legacy, reviving the A. Lange and Söhne brand with entrepreneur Günter Blümlein.

In 1994, A. Lange and Söhne debuted their first wristwatch collection, which included the Lange 1, Saxonia, Arkade and Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite” models. Subsequently, other successful models followed, such as Odysseus, Cabaret, Zeitwerk and the iconic 1815 — named for Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s birth year.

Blümlein died in 2001 and Walter Lange died in 2016, yet A. Lange and Söhne continues to rank among the world’s top luxury watchmakers with exquisite pieces that are highly coveted by today’s discerning collectors.

How accurate an A. Lange & Söhne watch is will vary based on a variety of factors, including its model, age and condition. However, the luxury maker's watches typically have a minimum accuracy rate of plus or minus three seconds per day. This level of accuracy exceeds the requirements of the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), the Swiss agency that certifies chronographs. Find a collection of A. Lange & Söhne watches on 1stDibs.

No, A. Lange & Söhne is not better than Patek Philippe. These two luxury watch brands are universally heralded for all the distinctive timepieces they’ve brought to market.

Known for impeccable craftsmanship and some of the most complicated timepieces ever created, Patek Philippe is considered by many to be the height of fine watchmaking.

With a watchmaking legacy that originated in the early 19th century, German brand A. Lange & Söhne has created a wide range of iconic watches, such as the Lange 1, and is renowned around the world for its chronographs and impeccably polished and elegant aesthetics.

When shopping for a watch, you should think about what you’re looking for in this type of accessory. You may wish to consider the power reserve, materials, accuracy, craftsmanship, where it was manufactured and more. If it’s your first watch, you may wish to consider whether or not you’d prefer a pre-owned model.

Buying a new, never-worn watch enables you to build a history with it that isn’t shared by anyone else, but the greatest advantage to buying a pre-owned watch is that it opens up a wider range of models to consider, including rare ones that have been discontinued.

Shop a wide variety of watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 5, 2024
How many watches A. Lange and Söhne makes each year will vary slightly. However, the luxury watchmaker averages annual production rates of around 5,000 timepieces. One of the major reasons why the brand's output is so low is due to the level of complexity of its timepieces. For example, it can take three to six months to produce just one Lange 1 watch. On 1stDibs, find a selection of A. Lange and Söhne watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024
To spot a fake A. Lange & Söhne watch. look at the numbers that appear on it. You will find a serial number on the movement inside the watch. Cross-referencing this number to information published on trusted online resources will allow you to double-check that it's valid. With a fake, the serial number may be incorrect or represent a different timepiece than the watch it actually appears on. The marking should be deeply engraved with numbers evenly spaced. A shallow or sloppy marking will usually indicate a replica. An experienced dealer or certified appraiser can also help you with the authentication process. Shop a diverse assortment of A. Lange & Söhne watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024
Lange only produces around 5,000 watches every year. As a result, the demand for the German watchmaker's timepieces often vastly exceeds the supply. This, combined with fine materials, precise movements and expert craftsmanship, makes A. Lange & Söhne an exclusive luxury brand. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of A. Lange & Söhne watches.
