Henri Joseph Harpignies Art

French, 1819-1916
Henri Joseph Harpignies was born in Valenciennes on June 28, 1819 and died in Saint-Privé onAugust 28 1916 He was a French landscape painter , watercolourist and engraver of the Barbizon School . Henri Harpignies' parents, Henri and Adèle, intended him for a commercial career, but his determination to become a painter led them to authorize him to enter Jean Achard 's studio in Paris in 1846. After two years of training, he left to travel to Italy . Returning to France in 1850, Henri Harpignies joined Corot and the Barbizon School, whose influence he came under. Bound by friendship, the two artists traveled to Italy together in 1860. In 1859, he collaborated in the decoration of the staff room of the Charité hospital in Paris. On his return from Italy in 1861, he achieved his first success at the Salon with his Lisière de bois sur les bords de l'Allier . He then exhibited regularly at the Salon. In 1866, he received his first medal for Le Soir in the Rome campaign, acquired by the State . He then lived at 185, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré in the 8th arrondissement of Paris before moving to 9, rue Coëtlogon . During his very long career, Henri Harpignies painted a large number of works in Hérisson in the Bourbonnais , as well as in the Nivernais and Auvergne . He made decorative works for the Paris Opera , including the Val d'Égrie panel , which he exhibited at the Salon in 1870. He was a friend of Léon Bonnat , who twice made his portrait in 1889 ( Musée des Beaux-Arts). He painted the stained glass windows of the Château de Trousse-Barrière in Briare in 1895. In 1898, he was named Rosati d'honneur . Anatole France called him “the Michelangelo of trees and peaceful countryside” . At the end of his life, he was nearly blind. He is buried in the cemetery of Saint-Privé ( Yonne ) . His works are held in numerous ublic collections : Such as Landscape with a City in the Distance (c.1865), watercolor, New York , Metropolitan Museum of Art . Modernist Conte Crayon Drawing Beach Scene David Burliuk Russian Futurist
By David Burliuk
Located in Surfside, FL
David Burliuk (Ukrainian, 1882-1967) Three figure on the beach (Hamptons, Long Island New York) Conte crayon drawing on paper. Hand signed lower left. Unframed Provenance: Bloomsbury Auctions David Davidovich Burliuk (Дави́д Дави́дович Бурлю́к; 1882-1967) was a Russian poet, artist and publicist of Ukrainian origin associated with the Futurist and Neo-Primitivist movements. Burliuk has been described as "the father of Russian Futurism." David Burliuk was born on 21 July 1882 in the village of Riabushky (near Lebedyn, Ukraine) in the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire. Burliuk's family was artistically inclined; two of his brothers were talented artists as well, Nikolai and Volodimir Burliuk. The Burliuk family partly descended from Ukrainian Cossacks on their father's side, who held premier positions in the Hetmanate. His mother, Ludmyla Mikhnevich, was of ethnic Belarusian descent. From 1898 to 1904, he studied at Kazan and Odesa art schools, as well as at the Royal Academy in Munich. His exuberant, extroverted character was recognized by Anton Azhbe, his professor at the Munich Academy, who called Burliuk a "wonderful wild steppe horse". During a time of significant industrialization and political change, movements such as the famed Der Blaue Reiter, a group Burliuk associated with in 1912, while he was in Munich, emphasized a shift away from the classical styles of the past, prioritizing the innovations of the future. In 1907, he made contact with the Russian art world; he met and befriended Mikhail Larionov, and they are both credited as being major forces in bringing together the contemporary art world. In 1908, an exhibition with the group Zveno ("The Link") in Kiev was organized by David Burliuk together with Wladimir Baranoff-Rossine, Alexander Bogomazov, his brother Volodymyr (Wladimir) Burliuk and Aleksandra Exter. The exhibition was a flop, especially because they were all unknown painters. The Burliuks and Larionov left for the aforementioned brothers' home in Chernianka, also known as Hylea; it was during this stay that their work became more Avant-Garde. That autumn, while visiting Ekster, they organized an exhibition which took place in the street; it was a success, and enough money was raised to go to Moscow. In 1909, Burliuk painted a portrait of his future wife, Marussia, on a background of flowers and rocks...

Rooftops (Framed 1970's New York Cityscape Landscape Drawing by William Clutz)
By William Clutz
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstracted New York City landscape drawing of urban rooftops and tree tops "Rooftops", created by William Clutz in 1977 30 x 20 inches, charcoal and pastel on paper 33 x 25 inches in light wood frame This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation. About the Artist: Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career. Resume Born: Gettysburg, PA 1933 Mercersburg, PA 1933-1951 New York City 1955-1996 Education Painting: Thomas Danaher(WPA artist) 1944-51 Mercersburg Academy, PA 1947...
