John Hardy was born in Tours, France, on March 23, 1923, to Charles Crum Hardy and the former Jacqueline Gadois. He lived in Brooklyn from age 1 to 6, when his family relocated to suburban Long Island. His mother died when he was 8, after which he was sent to live with another family in Roanoke, Va., while his father remained in New York. As a teenager, he lived with an aunt in Guilford, N.C He spent his childhood in various parts of the country including New York, Virginia, and North Carolina, and later lived in Florida and Georgia. His travels outside the USA include Europe, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, the Caribbean Islands, Panama, and Mexico.
In 1942, he married Betty Blackman, with whom he lived for 26 years and raised four children. He served in the Army from 1940 to 1945, spending 16 months in Europe during World War II. At age 52, he moved to New York City with Page Ogden, to whom he was married for 12 years. He subsequently lived with Naomi Lionni, who died in 1992.
He taught drawing and painting from 1958 to 1981, first at the Atlanta College of Art, and subsequently at the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology and at New York University. A figurative painter known especially for his portraits, cityscapes, and seascapes, his work captured the depth and complexity of his subjects with empathy, humor, and, in some cases, astute social commentary.
According to Gail Levin, an art historian, professor, and author specializing in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, “Like those of [Edward] Hopper and [Reginald] Marsh, Hardy’s paintings often imply multi-layered meanings, enabling him to distill the essence of a cultural moment. . . . He selects and manipulates with an uncanny power, achieving ironic realism.”
John C. Hardy, an artist and teacher who lived in SoHo and Springs, died of complications from a stroke at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City on Oct. 10 2014 in the company of Joan Semmel, his companion for the past 21 years. He was 91.

Karel Appel, (born April 25, 1921, Amsterdam, Netherlands—died May 3, 2006, Zürich, Switzerland), Dutch painter of turbulent, colorful, and semi-abstract compositions, who was a co-founder (1948) of the CoBRA group of northern European Expressionists. He was also a noted sculptor and graphic artist.
Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam (1940–43), and helped found the “Reflex” group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), in 1948. He moved to Paris in 1950 and by the 1960s had settled in New York City; he later lived in Italy and Switzerland. Sonia Delaunay was known for her vivid use of color and her bold, abstract patterns, breaking down traditional distinctions between the fine and applied arts as an artist, designer and printmaker.
Born Sarah Stern on November 14, 1885 in Gradizhsk, Ukraine, she was adopted in 1890 by her maternal uncle, Henri Terk, a lawyer in St. Petersburg, where she grew up, exposed to music and art, and learning several foreign languages. In 1903, she moved to Germany to study drawing with Ludwig Schmidt-Reutler (1863–1909) at the Karlsruhe academy of fine arts; Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951), composer-to-be, was among her classmates there. In 1905, she traveled to Paris where she attended art classes at the Académie de la Palette, learned printmaking from Rudolf Grossman (1889–1941), and met Amédée Ozenfant (1886–1966), André Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974), and Jean-Louis Boussingault (1883–1943). Sonia spent much of her time at exhibitions and galleries in Paris, which showed works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard, as well as Les Fauves, Henri Matisse and André Derain. She did, however, maintain contact with Germany, exhibiting at the Galerie Der Sturm, Berlin, in 1913, 1920 and 1921.
During her first year in Paris, Sonia met the German collector and art-dealer, Wilhelm Uhde (1874–1947), whom she married on December 5, 1908, and whose Montparnasse gallery, the Galerie Notre-Dame des Champs, showed her first solo exhibition. Through Uhde, Sonia encountered many painters, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Robert Delaunay (1885–1941). In 1910, Sonia divorced Uhde by mutual agreement, married Delaunay that same year, and gave birth to their son, Charles, in January 1911.
