Kevin Knopp Landscape Drawings and Watercolors
American
Kevin Knopp is a Wisconsin-based painter known for his lyrical landscapes and sensitive still life, influenced by what the artist calls, "the uncanny and overlooked in our ubiquitous everyday landscape." Knopp's work is heavily inspired by impressionism, both in technique and intent, using soft pastels colors and plein air painting techniques as he attempts to capture "a particular event and emotional experience in time and space that is then hopefully conveyed to the viewer." A piano tuner by trade, Knopp's profession, and own "purposeful tourism" take him to the far corners of the world. His works include subjects close to home such as Faskel Road in New London, WI, all the way to the Szczecin Harbor of the Pomerania region on the Polish-German border, where his grandmother was born in 1881.
Knopp has been quoted as saying "The surface of a painting or drawing conveys a visual perception of the space represented, I strive for the paint to dissolve as much as possible into a recreation of a visual experience on the surface of the work.” He mentions Mark Rothko as an example of another artist who has so much significance in the surface of his paintings.
Knopp was introduced to the world of Impressionism at the Chicago Art Institute, and later abstract impressionism while attending undergrad at Viterbo University and the New York Studio School. Knopp later spent time in Paris and earned his MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Art. He has gone on to teach art at every level, most recently as an adjunct professor of painting and art appreciation at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
He has shown his work in several galleries throughout Wisconsin, including the Haggerty Museum of Art and the David Barnett Gallery in Milwaukee, the Riverfront Arts Center in Stevens Point, and the Front Gallery in La Crosse. His work was likewise included in the 2007 Wisconsin Artists Biennial at the Museum of Wisconsin Art. When he is not painting, he spends his time immersed in music, playing the drums for his band and tuning pianos. He has been living with his wife in Waupaca, Wisconsin for the past 34 years.to

Shelley Lazarus (American, b. 1936) is a Los Angeles based artist who studied at Syracuse University, Pratt College, and Parsons School of Design, and has been teaching art for over 20 years.
Lazarus’ main goal as an artist is to bring a sense of movement and a sense of emotion to her paintings through the use of color. Her landscapes are done mostly on location, where she can feel the power of the atmosphere around her and through the use of color, composition and the movement of space, capture the subtle nuances that reflect in the light.
Lazarus was born and educated in New York, where as a teenager she began her art studies at Pratt College while still attending Lincoln High School. She later was a student at Syracuse University and Parsons School of Design. In 1973 she relocated to the Los Angeles area with her husband and their three sons. Although her art career was interrupted for a time, in 1981 she became involved with the Brentwood Art Center.
Since then, she has been actively pursuing her art career. Her works have been shown annually in both local and national shows. These works have received numerous awards including a Diptych and a Triptych that were in the International Art Competition for the Olympics in 1984, first place from the San Fernando Valley Art Club for a watercolor in the Santa Monica Mountain Celebration, and the recent Oklahoma National Watercolor investment award. She is a member of the Watercolor Honor Society and a signature member of the Oklahoma National Watercolor Society.
Her paintings are in the collections of private, corporate, and public sectors in the US and abroad, including the library at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is an active participant in Women Painters West, Valley Watercolor Society, Gallery 825 and Valley Institute of Visual Arts (VIVA).
Lazarus has taught art to both children and adults. At the present time she is teaching advance watercolor painting studies to adults at the Brentwood Art Center. She also teaches plein-air painting during the summer months and has given private lessons to those in the entertainment industry as well as to royalty.
In 1993 she became involved in the formation of TAG Gallery, a co-op gallery located in the Miracle Mile...

Tree roots emerge from a vase to create a forest of trees in Christina Haglid's "Canopy". The artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences.
At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at...
